I notice that when people attack a content creator over something stupid, nobody says a peep, but if anybody even so much as says something like "It's dumb to attack them for that," people line up to go "I can't believe you're getting so defensive over a content creator!"
CE gets extremely angry and eager to dismiss content creators talents. Think about it. They use their charisma to make friends and establish followers with people they have never met before. That's going to be a sore point to people who struggle with friendship in general.

Yeah, I picked some of that up from how vehemently some people get angry over the idea that streaming/content creating can be a job.

I think these type of stances are very weird. And I'm someone who is going to pronounce it as Kate Sihth (since the game will).

That's how it's coming across. I think it's more likely people get a dopamine high out of making some trivial thing into a morale battleground they get to feel like they're on the right side of. While the actual "victim" doesn't even care.

I don't think anybody cares about how someone personally pronounces it. Even if the dub kept the original pronunciation, people would still call him "kate-sith" out of convenience.

"I know it's ket-shee but I still want to pronounce it kate-sith," is a reasonable response. You aren't the kind of person people are getting upset at.

Lie about what? That he uses cheap clickbait to get views?https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/1/8/AAJHcPAAE50q.jpg Or that him mispronouncing a name is not an issue at all when literally everyone in the world mispronounces foreign words all the time.

Wait so this whole thing started because Squeenix made a tweet that they pronounce it "Kate Sihth" in the new game

That's actually weird. Why un-localize Aeris to Aerith but not un-localize Cait Sith pronunciation when that's arguably a bigger error?

Aeris/Aerith was never a matter of localization. It was a misspelling.

They most likely just don't care when it comes to Cait Sith's pronunciation, and are going with what they already had.

It can be transliterated either way.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerith_Gainsborough
This was transliterated to "Aeris" in Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics and "Aerith" in later products. Both transliterations have basis, as the Japanese "su" () is used when transcribing "s" (/s/) and "th" (//) to Japanese.
'Aerith' can be found in the game files of the localization, yet the final product chose 'Aeris' to appear to the player. That indicates the localizers were aware of how this transliteration works and opted with 'Aeris' as a pronunciation that would be more comfortable to westerners. Whether or not that was the right choice by any metric, it was a choice of localization, not a 'spelling error'.

This.
Aerith was always the intended spelling.

Though, I like how we're now in a situation where "kate sith" can join "Aeris" in arguments that revolve around people claiming "it's in an official product, so it must be correct."

The question is intended by who. Localization by definition makes some changes that are not in the scope of the intentions of the original artists. So, unless there's evidence that the original localization team wanted to directly translate the intended Japanese pronunciation to English but made an honest mistake, then it's most likely 'Aeris' was an intentional localization decision.

okay, and it doesn't make sense that mooks in western Yugioh are just gesturing with their hands where guns should be, but that's still an intentional localization decision of the product. Like I said, whether using the name 'Aeris' was a good choice artistically or most faithful to the original language simply isn't relevant to the question of whether it is a 'spelling mistake.' The localizers probably understood the Aerith/Aeris distinction, yet intentionally went with Aeris.

I mean, I'm sure "Aeris" was an intentional decision. It's just one that ended up being a mistake.

Like, the game released in 1997 alongside a guidebook in Japan that had all their names written in English, and it was "Aerith" even in that. It's not like it was supposed to be one spelling first and then they changed their mind later or something. Somehow the localization team wasn't aware of this, I guess.

Official translations make mistakes all the time whether due to lack of communication or lack of foresight, etc. They knew both Aeris and Aerith were viable translations, and chose the one they thought was correct, but it ended up being the incorrect choice.

This is where I disagree.

They probably did not choose "the one they thought was correct". At least, not with the definition of "correct" as most faithful to the vision of the Japanese product. That's the whole of what I'm saying. That would be a translation error, but faithful translation is distinct from localization. Localization is concerned with what makes the product most understandable or attractive to a local market.

If the decision was intentional, then they chose "Aeris" because that spelling and pronunciation was somehow expected to be more comfortable for western consumers than the alternative. It's less common to make decisions this way now, but companies would alter or outright rename characters if they thought it would make it more appealing to the different market.

Because CE has a rather irrational hatred of streamers and content creators, so they thrive on this kind of thing and get off on attacking anybody who disagrees.
