Suicide, and other bodily harm stuff, fair enough.

However, why the fuck is the word "beer" censored?! I've genuinely seen stuff like "so I went for a b**r with a friend" - damn, if kids aren't allowed to look forward to their first beer, that's a kick in the *****

Because a lot of key social media websites have the censorship sensibilities of Fox Kids in the 90s.

Unalived sounds stupid, childish, and kind of cultish.

I'm not sure if I should share this but I remember the first time I heard someone say "unalived".

Genuinely thought it was a slang term and politely laughed, assuming it was like "dying of embarrassment".

I was wrong. In my defence, I thought it was similar to saying "I was really embarrassed" (so one would respond along the "oh yeah, sorry man, you'll bounce back) - vs saying "I got rekt" (so one would say LOL FUCK YOU).

Yeah, I was considering making a topic about this as well.

Some of the stuff that gets self-censored on Youtube and even sites like Reddit is odd and ridiculous to me. Like, I can sorta understand it with Youtube due to how even the smallest infraction can get your video demonetized, but Reddit? Why censor and use euphemisms there?

Maybe I'm just getting old.

The phrase is usually unalived themselves. Im sure you could also unalive someone else and you said youve seen it used that way, I just havent myself.

Being a flagged word for YouTube demonetization isnt the best metric to gauge if something is kosher to discuss online. A lot of words that are considered controversial have the same effect on that site.

Because it's a rule you agreed to when you started playing a game/using a service/whatever. If you can't follow the rules you agreed to, that's your problem. If you don't like the rules, then don't agree to them and don't take part in the game/service.

Youre not much a fan for nuance Im guessing. One, the word suicide isnt banned so where thats coming from is what Im wondering. Two, Id love for you to question my logic with something that was both valid and sound but you failed both

if the word suicide isn't banned then why can't people use it on pretty much every social media site and have to use the word unalive?
if the suicide can't be used due to being a tragedy then the holocaust was a tragedy too and people can use the word and talk about it

It's an really bad and complex topic that has no clear general solution.

On one hand, we should want to create much more awarness for this. The numbers are crazy, it's an extremly big social problem in all of the western world, but somehow we ignore it so much.

On the other hand there is the Werther effect, meaning that any awarness could also lead to more encouragement.

Thats why the big social media are so strict about this. They don't want to be blamed for any death caused by some possible Werther effect on their plattform.

It's not just the word suicide, people are starting to self-censor things like "s*x" and "dr*gs".
It's a shame social media algorithms are affecting language even beyond their own platforms. Tech companies or (in Tiktok's case) the Chinese government shouldn't have this kind of influence.

I think it's only a matter of time before euphemisms like "unalive" suffer the same treatment.

Edit: No, now I remember. I tried to say something was a ret@rdant, like fire-ret@rdant clothing. That is a valid use of the word, albeit a little archaic.

Point being it should give the same warning you get with autism. Then a mod could look at my post, discern that I wasnt using an offensive term for mental handicap, and move along.

What should not happen is the site prevent you from posting in the first place.
