Picketing began Wednesday morning at Kaiser Permanente hospitals as some 75,000 health care workers go on strike in Virginia, California and three other states over wages and staffing shortages, marking the latest major labor unrest in the United States.

Kaiser Permanente is one of the countrys larger insurers and health care system operators, with 39 hospitals nationwide. The non-profit company, based in Oakland, California, provides health coverage for nearly 13 million people, sending customers to clinics and hospitals it runs or contracts with to provide care.

The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, representing about 85,000 of the health systems employees nationally, approved a strike for three days in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, and for one day in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The strikers include licensed vocational nurses, home health aides and ultrasound sonographers, as well as technicians in radiology, X-ray, surgical, pharmacy and emergency departments.

Same. I would imagine the pandemic really exposed a lot of flaws in the industry.

They need to extend that three days out if it's not long enough to get what they need.

My guess is that health care workers can't be out too long. They've hopefully calculated the correct amount of time needed to make their point.

Some people be like, they shouldnt be allowed to strike, because theyre too important to the people they serve and people can die if they dont work.

Sad but true.

I used to have KP insurance a few years ago, and when I went for a checkup/vaccines, the nurses were the most fed up I'd ever seen. They were openly talking about quitting, being underpaid, leaving the medical profession. So this isn't surprising and I hope they get everything they want.

I heard about the strike, but I've never heard of Kaiser.

Kaiser was a big steel company in CA during WWII. (Warning: oversimplification) They had so many employees, they were able to negotiate better health care prices and services for their employees. In the 1940s, they were already the model for what in the future would be called HMOs.

After the steel business faded, the health care operation remained.

Makes sense. Kaiser has been shit for years now. What was once convenient for having everything youd need under one roof has been replaced by doctors that try to usher you out the door before youre even in an examination room.

They dont have the time to actually engage with or listen to their patients. Its a five minute appointment followed by them printing out a bunch of useless information and sending you on your way. I have a hiatal hernia that has led to me having crippling reflux and heartburn for years now Im talking heartburn that lasts for 18 to 36 hours straight, keeps me up at night, etc., and every time I go to my doctor, they just up my dosage of pantoprazole. Ive tried pushing to get on the road to surgery to fix this and she just always shoots it down no matter how bad this gets.

You need to get a second opinion if you're having health problems. I had a specialist that refused to believe that the problem I was diagnosed with from a ultrasound was affecting my quality of life, so I made an phone appointment with the department for a different specialist. Second specialist took one look at my charts and referred me to the surgical procedure that I wanted. You are your best advocate.

They can, the government is just going to throw a bitchfit. I know what everyone is going to say. "They're healthcare workers! They have responsibilities! You want the people under their care to diiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee?"

No, I just want them to be paid fairly and have enough staff to help them so they don't die.

As I said in an earlier topic about this, deciding who is and isnt allowed to strike is a precedent we dont ever want to set.

Bleh

Then expect to see that precedent creep into other fields. The definition of essential will be stretched. Denying someone the right to strike means they now have no ability to fight for worker rights. What rights they do have sure as fuck didnt come from capitalists being generous.

Excellent timing to do this, shortly before federal government open season for health coverage selection.

Make the news and get federal employees to think twice about who they want to go with.

I must say I'm conflicted because my girlfriend who has been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer has received excellent care from Kaiser and would love to see their team be well compensated but I hope this doesn't cause her not to receive the care she needs.

Yes, its a fucked up situation. Worse, the assholes in charge will most definitely weaponise situations like yours to smear the striking workers.
