Also, younger demographics don't vote as consistently.

Still feels like the dems care more about not letting Trump win rather than actually putting forward someone who will lead real change. I say this as someone from the UK btw and thats exactly how it feels with Starmer as well.

I mean, it's mostly true. If Trump wins, it'll be a disaster that will end in anything from a massive set back, to actual genocide, political assassinations, a coup, and maybe even a full on civil war.

It's better to take the safest option for now. It's not likely that Trump will be able to run in 28, so the security of holding the office until then is more important.

If Trump was in jail or disqualified like he should be, this would be a completely different situation.

Consider that you're a corporation who bought and paid for Joe Biden like 5 decades ago. Why stop now? You got a long, long history of paying the man to do what you want, and seeing him follow through.

Unfortunately, it takes decades usually of being in politics before you can have the realistic chance of getting elected. I think that's the most simple answer.

I dont disagree but with Starmer we are replacing one Tory with a Tory-lite. The Overton window has shifted dramatically in the last decade and a half. Starmer winning isnt the panacea a lot of people think it will be and I say that as someone who will more than likely vote Labour at the next election.

Theres this and it's kinda like a promotion if you are a career politician which most are. Trump was a oddball in that. I imagine it takes a lot of time to gain enough clout in your party for them to be willing to nominate you.

Kinda like promotions at my job. Used to be it took forever to make Sgt even though requirements is only 2 years. Most lieutenants I've met already have some gray hair and captains typically do. Good luck making warden and having much of a career left.

Like we did have a lieutenant (now a captain) people disrespected the fuck out of him cause he was like 29 when he made it. We love him as captain though. It took awhile but he earned our respect.

As far as the boomer shit mentioned. Yeah it's a lot like that where I work but not necessarily all boomers. We call it the good ol boy system. Basically you need to be in the clique. Which often times takes a good while to work into.

Pushing back on this: before Biden, our previous presidential elections...
Trump had significantly less political experience than Clinton
Obama had significantly less political experience than McCain (and even Hillary in the primary)
W had 5 years as an elected official to Gore's 15

Trump was a wild card. His non political career and "calling it like he sees it" made him popular. Can't deny Obama had his race helping causing more African American voters come out and vote. Hillary the same but for woman. (Plus Bill had been president) Bush rode of daddy's coat tails.

The last two I mentioned where part of a clique due to family ties.

Obama legit was a good speaker though. I'm sure that helped him a lot. He had charisma compared to the others mentioned

People vote Republican to stop Joe Biden (Joe Biden!) converting America to radical far left socialism, don't they?

No one on the right seems to have a problem with pushing that line.

Smh. Come on man. At least do some research before making assumptions.

And yes that is an accurate evaluation. It could've gone even further with the Build Back Better Bill he proposed, but got shut down by Congress Republicans and Democrat Joe Manchin.

Surely part of being a good politician isn't just coming up with good policies... it's getting them through congress?

That's typically the biggest hurdle for Presidents (and foreign policy). Especially if getting them through Congress is bipartisan. With the current make-up of how it is, Joe Biden can get stonewalled just like with Barack Obama. Honestly it's amazing how Biden got this far. Just goes to show his many years of experience as a Senator.

Gonna spitball some thoughts here

1. I think we're generalizing; Biden and Trump aren't successful because they're old, and their spots at the top of their respective parties reflects circumstances and qualities unique to themselves. We aren't having this conversation if Obama wasn't term limited or, imo, if Michelle had run in 2020. Likewise on the GOP side the people running against Trump are mostly of standard politician age.

2. The Democratic Party didn't have a tea-party type movement sweeping new faces into power over incumbent until very recently (and even then, I wouldn't say the recent progressive/socialist surge has had the tea party's success.) Challenging an incumbent is a good way to get your career prospects within the party stymied. This has resulted in a relative lack of young people in positions that Presidential candidates usually come from.

Split House and Senate means nothing can go through. Obama had the same problem for 2nd term, worse after 2014 midterm both sides GOP. He couldn't pass anything he wanted.
