The books themselves were largely ok for the time they were written (very firmly in that bucket of "you probably got it on the scholastic bundle but nothing particularly special about it otherwise")

Everything since then has been desperate and noxious grabs for attention from the author which is weird. Like she spins a wheel for details nobody wanted or some awful take to post every quarter

Me, I preferred Bartimaeus as far as YA book series goes, looking back on it.

I didn't get around to reading them until I was an adult and then the stuff with the house elves (and the goblins too, really) stuck out to me like a sore thumb. I still like the stories, but that will always be a problem for me. Oh yeah, and the cringey names she used for some characters, like the most stereotypical thing she could think of.

The time travel stuff sucked too, especially when she had to have the time turner things destroyed a couple of books later so nobody would be asking why nobody was using them to stop Voldemort.

But yeah, I'm glad I already have the books because I'm not going to be contributing another cent to that hateful woman.

Yeah. I think it suffers from 2020s era of people wanting to find something wrong in media to complain about. Im reading right now how Harry was rich but terrible for not giving all his money to uproot the Weasleys out of poverty

He wouldn't have been able. They wouldn't have accepted it. Ron probably would've to an extent, like if Harry occasionally gave him money for a birthday present or something, but even he wouldn't have accepted the whole fortune or even a big chunk of it.

You can say what you want about JKR and it's probably deserved but people who are trying to pick apart awesome kids books that actually interested children in reading, fun magic stories that were some of the best written stories aimed at kids at the time is just dumb. The books preached tolerance and love as a major theme, and maybe JKR does not exhibit that in real life but people are just looking for things to complain and get angry about in the work itself.

Yeah. I feel like if she just chilled after Deathly Hallows then she wouldn't be getting anywhere near the heat she gets. Which, of course, would mostly be because she wouldn't be seen hanging around and supporting deeply shitty people. But people would likely be more willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on some more questionable things.

That's a bad argument since there's no evidence Michael Jackson did anything wrong. Big difference between him and Rowling.

The books were "okay" back in the day when I was younger. As I got older, they were kinda mediocre overall. There were other children's books and young adult books I preferred. I will say that the series peeked at Book 3 or 4 and it's all downhill from there, with book 7 being out and out bad. I struggled so hard to finish that book.

One thing that particularly bothers me is how bad the magic system is for a book that's primarily about witches and wizards. And the external media makes that readily apparent when they have such a small assortment of spells that people routinely use / learn etc.

This has been one thing that I always feel the need to argue with. The lack of a strict magic system is exactly part of why the world feels so magical in the first place. It feels like anything can happen and there's a sense of whimsy and spontaneity that IMO is part of why the book was so able to capture kids' imaginations so easily. Even the term "magic system" seems very unmagical.

I saw a nice theory that basically said that the best gift Harry ever got was an old hand-me-down watch from the Weasley family as it made him feel part of a loving family, while Ron was given a brand new watch, which was nice for him to have something that wasn't a hand-me-down. I know it's not what you mean about the Weasleys not accepting Harry's wealth, but what you said made me remember that they truly gave Harry everything he wanted.

The Harry Potter franchise is still beloved, popular with kids as well as those who grew up with them, and making a shit ton of cash.

I don't know how a derivative set of books in the English Public School novel tradition achieved that feat, but they did.

People capable of casting it tend to not care.

Like yeah it's against the law, but if you're a evil wizard/witch then what mechanics are in place so that you have a need to cast anything else?

All I can recall is

  1. Don't cast it against Harry Potter.
  2. Obstructions can block the blast.

But like, obstructions can block bullets too. Guns are still the go-to killing tool for us muggles.
