I don't really think Harry Potter itself is problematic. Rowling has said some messed up things on social media, but Harry Potter itself is fine.

I can definitely see why the goblins are an unflattering stereotype, but I never got that from house-elves. I always saw them like brownies in folklore that do housework in exchange for cream, but I guess that's still technically transactional.

...Yeah maybe they should've just had them work for comically low pay, that probably would've been a bit better than just slaves.

It's a sort of combo of Dobby being treated as the "odd one" for not enjoying being treated like a slave, the one House Elf going into an alcoholic depression over it, and Hagrid, the sweetest sort being like "Honestly Hermione this whole advocating for better conditions for a whole race is stupid and out there because it's their natural disposition to be ruled".

Like Hermione being shown as the butt of the joke because she's advocating for racial equality is a little sus we can't lie.

Yeah, it felt like Rowling took away a lot of the 'mysteriousness' of Brownies by making them a very present entity compared to the folklore where they just did occasional tasks and would be offended if taken advantage of (treated like slave labour)

She had a perfect set up with folklore but just made some very odd changes and then dealt with those who rightly called it out (in universe) as the odd one.

You see, I like that. I was devouring Artemis Fowl books at the same tome I started reading HP, and it broke my heart when Butler's real name was revealed and it was Domovoi.

The point isnt about taking her money, or punishment and retribution, its sending a message that says this is not okay to spread hateful misinformation that harms vulnerable and marginalized minorities, not to mention the harm caused to cis women as well.

Rowling has no real influence outside of financial influence. She's not a relevant cultural influence, at least in the States.

I don't know anyone who actually talks about her or her opinions on anything.

The only thing she can tangibly affect is something she funded with her own money. And let's be honest, at this point in time her portfolio probably passively funds everything she could ever want.

Protesting her and boycotting her doesn't actually do anything to her, I'd imagine. You're basically trying to drain the ocean using a bucket.

She wrote a successful book series and made crazy bank and now she just rambles incoherent shit on twitter.

Boycotting isn't necessarily done with the knowledge it will do something. I do what I can to not give any money to Nestle.

She really messed up by making the House Elves more than a background element. What would have worked better than them just "Really liking to be servants" would be if they got some benefit out of it. Like they get free shelter for work that is basically zero effort due to their magical abilities. Oh the human needs their laundry done? *Snap* It's done, nap time bitches.

Also it feels like a few books hinted at how wizards are fucking jerks who conquered other magical races, but they just leave it at that? It's like "Whoops, turns out wizard history is embarrassing, moving on...." A deep dive into that, fully exposing the terrible things human wizards have done to gain and maintain dominance in the magical world, could have been awesome.
