I was on my way home from doing my weekly shopping at Wal-Mart when a car pulls up behind me. I was in the left lane and they started blaring their horn at me. I start waving my arm at them, telling them to go around me. This was on surface streets with plenty of stoplights, not the interstate or highway, and I'd just come up on a light that'd just turned green. While they go past me, one of the women rolls down a window, swears at me, and throws her drink at me.

They move back over to the right lane and try to speed away, but get caught behind several cars at a stoplight. I pull up beside them and show them the same "respect" they showed me, and the light turns green. I start driving, they pull ahead of me, and they proceed to get in front of me and slam on their brakes. Luckily, my brakes are good and I merely bumped into them, maybe causing a scratch on both vehicles. The women get out of their car and start cussing at me, trying to keep me from leaving, but I'm able to go around them, flipping them off while I'm at it. They hurry back into their car and follow me close behind.

That's when I hear the fucking gun go off. Two shots.

I panicked and stepped on the gas. They chased me for a while, both of us blowing past redlights. Thank fuck it was night, as I drive a black car, making it hard to see me after I turned off my lights to try and lose them. They finally gave up when they lost sight of me after I got too far ahead.

I'm still shaking a bit from it. I'm surprised I didn't shit myself.

I wish I did. When I heard the gun go off, though, anything that wasn't "get the fuck out of here" left my mind.

At the very least, I'm going to look into getting a dashcam.

Let that be a lesson to you. If people antagonize you on the road, don't respond in kind. You have to let that stuff go because you don't know if those folks are packing.

I know most people will accuse of some "blaming the victim" BS, but why did you choose to reciprocate with someone so willingly to casually road rage a random stranger on in the middle of the night? They had no right to bring a gun to the situation, but you shouldn't have played into the game, if they were only throwing swears around.

Okay, take a breath and the time you need to get yourself together. Gonna give you a to-do list:

1) Notify law enforcement, if you haven't already. Give them the location where it transpired. Most businesses have cameras and may have caught something.

2) Check your car for damage. Look for bullet holes or damage around the vehicle.

3) Check your dash cameras if you have any. You may have caught something and not known it. If so, TURN IT OVER to law enforcement. This may not be an isolated incident.

Its a lot easier for all of us, not involved, to say how wed react. Plenty of times Ive been in your shoes and driving away been like holy fuck whyd I do that but you get caught up at times. Totally understandable, think we can all agree at least youre okay and were happy for that.

I just try my best now to not even care, I shake my head and go on with my day.

I'm not a confrontational person, so it comes natural to me.

Trying to keep from leaving. Yeah that is kind of a crime after an accident . You should have called the police right away from your car.

All good points. I can do the first 2, but I don't have a dashcam, unfortunately. Went through several intersections that are usually busy, so it's possible it was all caught on camera.

I'm glad I didn't. If they'd thought I was calling the cops when we stopped, they might've shot me then and there. Aside from a tire iron I'd have to dig for, I had no way to defend myself against a gun. All the more reason I need to get my own.

Obviously it's the other people's fault, but I'd be way too afraid of provoking people like that.

I would guess hit and run laws (if it was one) can be pushed to the side when you are afraid for your life, but I'm far from a lawyer.

Admittedly, that does sound like a hit and run. I do need to report this, but in this case, I don't regret driving away. As I said before, if they'd seen me on the phone, thinking I was calling the cops, they might've shot me right there.

Besides, if there were any working cameras on that stretch of road (with my luck, there won't be), it'd show them moving over in front of me and slamming on their brakes, forcing me to stop. I do remember the light at the upcoming intersection was green, so they weren't doing it to avoid hitting someone in front of them.

I know, I know, this could've all been avoided if I hadn't engaged. But I did, and there's no changing that.

when you provoke people, eventually you're going to do it to the wrong person. looks like TC met that person tonight.

There are some very important lessons to be had here

1. Never engage with road ragers. You never know when they're legitimately unhinged and willing to harm you or your passengers.
2. Learn where your local police station is. If some crazy kook is following you, just lead them there instead of your house.

but yea, it's really sad that there are so many people willing to hurt and kill others for the most minor of offenses.

Not only that, but you didn't keep your distance, and attempt to flee a fender-bender. (Good luck explaining THAT to the insurance companies and have fun paying raised premiums if or when you get caught)

I took it more as a tough love situation. Liek "oh my gosh, I'm so glad your okay but why the hell did you do something so stupid!".

No one is blaming TC, as nothing justified trying to take their life. The people who escalated with a gun are undeniably in the wrong.

People are just telling TC that what they did was very dangerous and that they may not be so lucky next time.

Crazy how you flipped story about holding up the passing lane, making someone pass you on the right, getting into a road rage accident(you hit them from behind and then hit an RAN) and complaining that the situation you entered and escalated willingly got out of control. Mutual stupidity, shooting is worse but they one upped you. Best to avoid these situations, most people are only tough on the internet.

Fun fact, I was recently recommended a video where some road ragers where arrested where the victim was assaulted and the woman fired off at the fleeing car (with a toddler in the backseat).

The video that caused the recommendation? A video of an argument over snow shoveling leading to a double murder and suicide.

I used to have a coworker who'd share anecdotes of her boyfriend and how she was starting to get annoyed going out with him because he'd turn every conflict into an opportunity to pull his gun out. People where the grass is be fucking crazy. Better to stay inside and avoid all that.
