I guess the wood is fossilized. But predates any known structures built by a massive amount of time. At the time this was built, we thought our ancestors were still walking around naked and scavenging for food and sleeping on the ground

Holy crap... is that like a game changer?

Or still in the realm of "ape" or w/e?

Although I find this stuff neat, not well versed.

It's before the commonly accepted advent of our species, but still in our ancestry. The big deal here is that ancient evidence of woodworking is usually indirect; we don't know just how complex their crafts were. For some deep time context, an article from 2001 talking about 1.5 million year old stone tools having traces of wood on them. So we've been carving up wood in some way for a long time, but the fitted logs are the basis of large structures. It's not certain at all, but the idea that pre-sapiens humans might've had, fuckin', log cabins is crazy.

I didn't see anything in the article about it being fossilized. But an older gentleman I used to work with who knew a lot about antiques said water was a good preserver depending on the material. He told me that when I showed him a knife I'd found while fishing along the banks of a local river. It was a coca cola knife that he estimated to be from the 30s. The river had recently flooded and I guess this was uncovered on the bank when it receded. I still have it somewhere...

"Not only did the working of trees require considerable skill, the right tools and planning, the effort involved suggests that the makers were staying in the location for extended periods whereas we have always had a model of Stone Age people as nomadic," Barham added.

The rarity of wood preservation at early archaeological sites - it is perishable over time - means scientists have little understanding of how early humans used it.

Can't wait until NatGeo or the BBC does a documentary on this.

I haven't read anywhere anything credible on this story, nothing in our current knowledge of human history did early humans have structures dating 476,000 years ago. Either they dated it improperly are they are incredibly misguided on what this finding is.

That's sort of why it's news. Because it advances our current knowledge. It's also likely not homo sapiens but another species of the genus homo.

That's why this is news. We knew human ancestors were doing something with wood, up to 1.5 million years ago, but only via traces of tree matter on stone tools.

The article says they suspect the artifacts were from Homo heidelbergensis, generally regarded as one of the last common ancestors between modern humans and Neanderthals.
