https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4216039-durbin-no-2-senate-democrat-concerned-about-dress-code-change/

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) says he is concerned about a decision to loosen the Senates dress code to allow senators to wear whatever they want on the chamber floor, arguing we need to have standards. Durbin, the No. 2-ranking Senate Democrat and chairman of the powerful Judiciary Committee, signaled hes not ready to let hoodies, blue jeans or shorts become the norm on the Senate floor, which has been the venue of many important historic moments over the years. Well, Im concerned about it, Durbin told The Briefing with Steve Scully on SiriusXMs POTUS channel, when asked about the recent change in the rules of decorum. Durbin acknowledged that changing the Senates dress code would accommodate his colleague, first-term Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), whos well-known for wearing a hoodie and shorts instead of a business suit like most senators, but suggested the issue is bigger than one senator. The senator in question from Pennsylvania is a personal friend, but I think we need to have standards when it comes to what were wearing on the floor of the Senate, and were in the process of discussing that right now as to what those standards will be, Durbin told the show.

Durbin said he doesnt know what Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was thinking when he approved the change but said he planned to speak to his leader about the matter. I cant understand exactly what he was thinking at that point, he said, when asked why Schumer made the change. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt until I speak to him but I think the Senate needs to act on this.

What a stupid thing to care about. The dress code is not in the Cons., and I don't think it's even in any official Senate rules legislation either, it's just a formality because we've been conditioned to view suits = srs bsns.

In reality, as WAH jobs during the pandemic where people worked in their pajamas showed, the way you dress does not affect your professionalism. That's just corporate power tripping propaganda.

Also, fuck Dick Durbin. He seems to be a thorn in the side over the stupidest and most useless squabbles.

They still chose to call him Dick. To me that seems intentionally cruel because obviously they're going to be heavily bullied for having that name in school.

They might have as well just called him Penisface McSuckoff Durbin.

Hoodies and shorts should 100% be allowed if a member of Congress wants to dress that way. What's important is the work that they do, not what they're wearing while they do it.

Eh, I find that hard to believe. I knew about "Dick" being short for Richard because of Happy Days and I definitely saw Richards bullied over "dick".

Also there's even the extra bully avenue of Dick Durbin = DD, so even if he was going by Richard as a child, there's just too many opportunities to make him miserable for miserable children to pass up.

why should they have them

Because they are professional spaces that are supposed to be separate from normal everyday occurrence. The itent is that what goes on is of high importance and begets professional behavior and courtesy in speech, presentation and conduct.

Same as if I go to someone's wedding and am the only guy wearing khakis and crocs it would be seen as an insult in many cases. The situation surrounding the environment begets a certain type of attire.

That being said I dont see why business casual tier can't be fine.

I agree with senators dressing like senators when appearing before the senate.

I know that a lot of people are in favor of freedom of expression at any time, but there are reasons people dress the way that they do while on the clock. If you need a nurse, look for the person in scrubs. If you're fighting a war, aim for the person in the opposing uniform. ("I thought the civilian was a plain clothes soldier.") If you're playing a game of football, it makes sense to wear your team's uniform and not go out there looking like a muscular so-and-so who just stumbled onto the field. In fact, I would consider it cheating to not be in proper uniform. I wouldn't put it past the Patriots to wear the opposing team's uniform if they could.

It's not like a school imposing a uniform to rob kids of their freedom of expression. It's the fucking senate. You choose to be there. You choose to operate according to the established rules of the system.
