Gonna have to write off my Volkswagen Passat, sadly.

Did the engine break? No.
Did the exhaust or fuel system fall apart? No.
Is there excessive rusting? No.
Is there any actual mechanical issue at all that would prevent the car from being drive safely and comfortably? No.

But you see, the ECU is saying that the motor for the left parking brake doesn't work (because cars need electric parking brakes, right?), and to repair that is gonna cost more than is reasonable to spend.

Fucking nonsense.

It took 3 people, including me and a roadside assistance person, to figure out how to change my car's battery (some shit about the positive terminal being under the hood and the negative terminal in the trunk, fucking how). Still didn't figure it out until it was towed to the dealership.

So yeah I won't be doing much tinkering around with that car

Edit: To littlebro, it's literally just a Camaro. I have no idea why it was designed that way, maybe it was just for my year (2012)

Agreed.
Not to mention other stuff like having to pay a fucking subscription for extra features in a car you already own.

One of my pet peeves is how using a phone is righfully banned while driving, but somehow looking at a screen in the middle of the console is fine.

Also, funny that you mentioned Passat. A car that's been known as the go-to family vehicle for decades. Instead, they went with this sporty look for some reason and there's literally more head space in new Golf than 2021 Passat in the back seat, due to aggressive downward sporty line.

We aren't talking about safety features (those are good, though)

Your car shouldn't be written off because the electric handbrake motor won't unseize on one side because the computer is confused.

You know what the solution is to this problem? Mechanical hand brakes. A solution that worked wonderfully for every car until about the late 90s when they started phasing them out for electric gadgets that require motors and a computer.

  1. It's a brand new parking brake motor. It won't work because the ECU is playing up. So many of these computer systems will shut down basic functionality because the computer is required to make the mechanisms work
  2. The right side still works fine, so the parking brake will apply, albeit lopsidedly
  3. It's an automatic. You don't need a parking brake.
  4. An electric parking brake requiring two seperate motors attached to a computer is the quintessential definition of over engineering when the original solution to this problem was a mechanical handbrake that was an awful lot less easy to fuck up.
If I could replace the electric parking brake with a handbrake I would in a second. It would perform the same function (essentially nothing) and it would be easier and cheaper to maintain.

Touch screens are so fucking inefficient for damn near everything they're used for while driving, I have seen cars that were completely fine just flat ass stop working because the computer read shit wrong or a minor system failed too, so... yeah, it's bad.

One thing I dislike is the increased role of software in vehicles and the rise of "software as a service" (i.e. renting features that would've otherwise been permanently included with the purchase of your vehicle) coinciding with the increase of prevalence of electric vehicles. So that stink of scummy practices and stupid touch screen interfaces get associated with electric vehicles, damaging the impression people get of them.

I really dont look forward to the next time I buy a new vehicle which will probably be like 10 years. My truck is from 2014 but it has the perfect setup to me. It has modern conveniences like powered windows and power seats which I like. It does have a good size digital screen above the center console that is mostly for the radio control (though I mostly use the hands free physical buttons on the steering wheel) and also serves as the backup camera when in reverse.

But everything else is still what Id call normal. It still has a physical center console for controlling the fan, defrost, AC/Heat and all that. Physical buttons.

It hasnt gone overboard yet. I look at some of the newer trucks and that physical center console is gone, its all through a touch screen. I really dont want that.

I guess if it comes down to it Ill just shell out the money for a classic restored vehicle that is basically brand new, but from the 70s. Id rather have that than the new vehicles with all the electronics.

The thing with a motorized lock/brake is when they fail, they fail in the position theyre in. A mechanical brake that fails could change positions. Thats the safety feature theyre designing the functionality around. They can also do automatic things like being automatically disengaged if the driver forgets to turn it off. Thats a safety feature too!

i dont know how much your car is worth or the price of the control board for it but the internet says $1000-2000 for a typical car ECB

also I think by calling it a computer youre making it sound more complicated than it is. So much of what we use has been controlled by computers for decades when its functionally just a control board that is specialized to perform a few functions

I wouldn't call it a "supercar" but one time I was given an Infinity G35 coupe to use for about a week (loaner). I don't recall it having any handles.

Steep learning curve figuring out how to open the door the same way twice, and to open the gas cover. Depending on the key fob setting, it could keylessly unlock when I was close enough. IIRC, it could also unlock and start keylessly if I was close enough. Never got the gist of what set off what though. I think you could just start it remotely but keep it locked too.

Sometimes, I could even use the key to get in the car and start it.

Then depending on what was going on with the key fob, it could start when I sat down and clicked the seatbelt, or I sometimes I needed to use the key to start the car.

The cover for the gas cap was such an ordeal to get open that there was a group of about 5 people rubbernecking at the gas station when I got finally it open.

Nice looking car, but I was happy to give it back.

2013 Camaro. I like having the battery in the trunk. It stays clean and doesn't have any corrosion around terminals. They also last longer not sitting inside that hot engine compartment. They run cables to terminals in the engine compartment so you can jump start the car without having to get to the battery under the spare in the trunk. That would be a real hassle.
