Been thinking about this lately.

Nintendo Online already has Game Boy and Game Boy Advance available, and the other two handhelds remaining are the DS and 3DS. Their two-screen formats present new difficulties that previous handhelds do not, however, nor do any of their current console offerings present the same challenge (currently NES/SNES/Genesis/N64). We will almost certainly see the GameCube and Wii in the future, which Nintendo has solutions for regarding power and motion controls.

The Wii U does have some similar issues as the DS and 3DS...but most of its big games have been ported, remastered, or replaced in the series and it started with the power of a console instead of a handheld. It's also got two consoles to come before it whereas the DS and 3DS are the two remaining handhelds to explore, plus the Wii U was less successful than them...so the Wii U-issue is a bit different and minimized in comparison.

Nintendo's got thirteen years of software on the DS and 3DS they can still make available to people. What's their move going to be about this?

Are they going to just remaster some hits to fit their next system like they're doing with Mario VS Donkey Kong right now? Will they continue combining past system features like the Wiimotes/Joycons and have a second screen in the future -- maybe hinged like the DS/3DS, maybe ejectable like a SIM Card tray, maybe detached like Bluetooth connectivity? Do they just split the screen for their top and bottom halves of the games? Get us a solution for that and that makes getting access to the Dreamcast in the future more likely -- that feels like that'd be a cool selling point for them and Sega both.

Or does Nintendo even bother with games built this uniquely different from the rest of gaming history anymore?

I don't know this obviously, but I feel like Nintendo's got to be considering what to do regarding their past work with the DS and 3DS as they develop their next system. I don't think they just let the games disappear from being accessible on modern systems forever and ever...but I don't know what works the best today as games on modern systems, what gets people the most excited as fans, and what makes Nintendo more money as a company along the way either if they pursue this.

What should Nintendo do? I hope it's something. Link Between Worlds on a TV would be sweet.

Possibly do remasters of some stuff. Alternatively maybe Switch 2 will actually have GameCube, DS and 3DS for Nintendo Online, but not getting my hopes up

I think Nintendo is taking notes on how much money these ports/remasters are making and that will be the direction GameCube games go in the future.

Switch has a touch screen so the games could technically work there if they fit both screens in one.

Nintendo tends to avoid requiring the touch screen because most people play in docked mode.

Unlike the wii u you can't play with the touch tablet and the big screen at the same time.

Don't forget Virtual Boy. Hope they have a 3D add on to play those ports.

Most likely, the major stuff will see remakes and remasters. When the 3DS eShop closed, someone asked what 3DS games will be remade for Switch and my gut answer was Luigi's Mansion 2, and lo and behold, it was the first one announced. Other popular answers were Fire Emblem Awakening, Link Between Worlds, and Pokemon X/Y/S/M, and I think those will all come out on the successor. But I think the large majority will simply be trapped on the defunct console, and I mean, even of the significant stuff.

Why would they port the Pokemon games when they could "remake" them and call them like pokemon xx and xy

I feel like there were plenty of multiplayer games that require you taking it out or had the functionality, but maybe that was optional?

There seems to be a trend of 3/DS games getting put on modern consoles.

Though we don't know if Izuna is gonna be remake/remaster or new game.

Though looking back at things now, it's disappointing that the ports/remakes for Luigi's Mansion 1, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Mario & Luigi 1 & 3, and Yoshi's Woolly World ended up on 3DS. All of those could have been on Switch.

Nintendo is weird about GameCube games so I don't think we'll see them on NSO any time this decade. They'll just continue to remaster those games whenever they see fit.
As for the 3/DS issue, they probably just do what games they can? Like the ones that have touch controls as optional. Or with the Switch 2, have the dock be self sufficient so you can use your switch like you used to use the Wii U game pad? I don't see that happening though tbh.

They'll make another dual screen handheld sometime after the Switch 2 to capitalize on what will then be the retro DS craze

I have an idea where 3DS games can be emulated on a higher res screen by using head tracking to create a 3D effect. They already have the tech from that fancier 3DS.
