Thats a very good question, because at least for the original, all the home releases are shit in different ways.

One of the home releases is shit because the masters had degraded, so I would imagine whatever they offer on Crnchyroll shares similar problems.

So for the original, your best bet may be pirating a recording from the original Japanese airing (or the Funimation one if you prefer the dub, though that may be censored).

Kai is Z without the filler, and Id imagine the home release is better there since they basically redid all the animation I think, but I havent watched Kai to compare.

i watched the uncut version till i reached the buu saga (stopped somewhere after fatbuu vs ssj3 goku). was not a fan of that saga idk why.

Honestly, I really liked Dragon Ball Kai. It cuts a lot of the fat out. And by fat, I mean filler. I'm not talking about episodes of filler plot but episodes where its spent with staring contests and scenery. You'll get through the whole anime much quicker. The series slows down around Buu saga since it seems like there wasn't as much filler as say...Frieza saga.

People might tell you not to watch Kai but I'd suggest it. It has all the plot and fights that are shortened down to be interesting and great for people with ADD.

Abridged basically as its name suggests abridges the hell out of the story so the pacing is much better, but its primary purpose is to exaggerate the hell out of things and make things hilarious. I dont recommend it for a first watch. It will be far funnier if youve seen the original or Kai first.

If you watch Dragonball first it will definitely enhance your DBZ experience and you'll learn basically how Goku got all of his friends. You'll come out of it knowing exactly what kind of person Goku is and why he does what he does. Cool stuff with Piccolo in it too.

But I guess you don't HAVE to watch it first.

I haven't seen DBZs abridged but Sword Art Onlines abridged is legit better than the original. Which isn't the highest bar, but it is actually one of my favorite animes. Can't wait for the last episode in a few years.

I would advise it. The original is better than Z anyway after the first arc. Doing Z first is like doing Naruto Shippuden without Naruto.

Only the two last Z movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F are canon, and they are basically Dragon Ball Super movies taking place after Z.
The other movies cant fit in the canon timeline, but they can be placed "around here and there" if you really want a break with a "what if" story.
