I honestly dont think the memes matter.

They do when it's perfectly normal for kids to not watch TV.

Probably. Part of the reason the Wizard of Oz is so well known is that most of it has been in the public domain for a long time.
Some of the early disney stuff is reaching it.

Language evolves all the time. The modern use of "Calarts" has nothing to do with John K's definition of it being Renaissance Disney style. When someone says "Calarts" today 99% of the time they are not referring to John K's definition.

Imagine if people said you shouldn't say the word "zoomer" to refer to people born from circa 1997 to 2010 because 20 years ago it referred to boomers who were physically active.

They cleverly reboot themselves every decade or so. Then every kid is exposed to Scooby Doo, and now every generation has a nostalgic memory of the franchise.

Scooby-Doo also has a great hook. A funny talking dog and his friends solve a mystery where someone is pretending to be a monster to scare people. It's probably most kids first time watching something like a whodunit.

I think it was def. a lack of competition/reruns thing. Hell, even the powerhouses that succeeded them mostly lost relevance beyond a 90s nostalgia rush, thats petered out and moved onto 2000s nostalgia.

That Flintstones comic from the 2010s was legit though.

Scooby Doo keeps getting new iterations. I know some people who watched Mystery Inc., though theyre not much younger (younger millennial and older gen z).

Weird thing is it often isn't that much easier.

I wanted to put on classic Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry for my daughter in Australia. My choices are to buy an expensive DVD set and/or Blu-Ray set (they both have exclusive episodes) or watch out of context clips uploaded by Warner Bros on YouTube.

But I can get some of their new shows on a specific streaming service. Not the older stuff though.

I don't think it's that much different for the Hanna-Barbera stuff (not that I would put those on lol).

Nickelodeon stuff is a bit easier thanks to Paramount Plus being rather good with their legacy content and here they also have a streaming and broadcast channel dedicated to it. Disney stuff is mostly good too.

I feel like it was overall easier to be exposed to it as a kid. I remember random Looney Tunes episodes turning up between TV shows back in the 90s.

I was just telling my girlfriend about how movies like Wizard of Oz, which is almost 100 years old, are going to be losing a lot of cultural relevancy in the coming years. Like, it will still always have its place in history, but kids in 2023 aren't going to be watching Wizard of Oz because it's not the type of "old" movie parents these days will show them. If parents show kids one of their childhood movies now, it's going to be one of their childhood films, not their parents'.

Mary Poppins is gonna be another one. I doubt kids of today are gonna care about any Disney movie before The Little Mermaid.

Even the memory of Disney being a company/brand that didn't make big budget blockbuster movies has died and they only started doing that 20 years ago.

Even in the adult sense I can see how less relevant The Godfather and Scarface is with teenagers and young guys compared to when I was that age.

For sure. Growing up id flip on Cribs on MTV and literally every rapper had a Scarface poster framed in their house, and these days Scarface is mostly regarded as a pretty good gangster movie with some memorable lines rather than the cultural touchstone it used to be.

Fuckin' Bluey comes up from every friend with toddlers, nowadays. Maybe they don't watch it on a TV.
I imagine you can watch a lot of it for free. I know for some shows like PJ Mask or Paw Patrol have official youtube channels that endlessly stream it. It's edited so that plotlines aren't fully played out and jump around a bit. Basically you're not watching the full show, but honestly with the attention span kids have it doesn't often matter. I imagine Bluey has a similar thing

Bluey episodes are only 7 minutes long and is one of the most watched shows on Disney+.

I'm in Australia where the show is made and it is available for free over here however.

Paw Patrol and PJ Mask are similar in the sense that an episode only goes for 10 minutes (although they bundle two together) so they're the kind of shows kids can just have on in the background for a long time whether that's on a proper streaming service or YouTube. Not a coincidence that it's these shows that are popular right now with young kids. They have a lot of content and are easy to access and stream.

It's inaccurate that there are characters who have toothy smiles that look like worms? People don't dislike the art style because it came from California. They dislike it because it's an ugly-ass art style.

What's with people like you and AceMos trying to trick people into liking "CalArts"? By any other name, shit still stinks. It isn't the victim of bad branding or prejudice toward the state or art school that it's alleged to have originated from. A lot of people simply do not like that art style.

And please don't be pedantic about how "art style" isn't the right descriptor for it.

It's a cute poppy art style in cartoons for children, I never understand why there was this raging contingent of adults when I grew up watching absolutely hideous cartoons like Ed Edd n Eddie, Ahhhhh Real Monsters, CatDog and Ren and Stimpy.

That's funny. I don't recall a post where I said that art designs in animation were invariably good until CalArts came along.

Yes, it's an age thing. If a young person dislikes that design, I guess you can just chalk that up to them being influenced by older people and their negative opinions.

There's no reason to admit that some people just genuinely do not care for that style of animation.

It's telling that so many of the "CalArts" shows are actually way better looking than the stuff that was around 10+ years before. LIke, I'm not sure why I'm supposed to be looking at Powerpuff Girls and thinking "damn, this shit ballin', fuck Centaur World".

I avoided TLA for years because I thought their heads looked stupid and Aang's tattoo was cringe, so I should know a thing or two about having a dumb cartoon opinion and being a jackass in general about it.

I find the people who complain about CalArts are also the people who say WOKE every other word.

John K is a racist pedo. I've known since I used to follow his blog at spumco.com. All the shit that came out about him 20 years after the fact wasn't really a surprise. In his blogs he regularly lamented about how PC modern animation had become and praised the old racist Looney Tunes cartoons as "true" animation. He'd even add his own racist caricatures in his blog.

I'm just saying that the people should know that the person who invented the Cal Arts slur is not too different from many of the people who use it unironically.

(Oh, he also hated anime and pitied Don Bluth as well).

The animation in cuphead is way better than those cartoons and they're not 60s cartoons either. Cartoons in the 60s were like space ghost and that old green lantern cartoon where the animation was super stiff and everything was more realistic looking.

Cuphead is more like the old Disney cartoons from the 30s through the early 50s rubber hose animation style.
