Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like the primary reason we know about cartoons like this was because they were on TV and there was nothing else to watch.

But kids don't have that problem. They can watch whatever whenever.

At most we see these characters get licensed out to cheap brands but I don't think kids really think or care about them.

Am I wrong? How many kids know who Dick Dastardly is?

Yup. Nobody cares.

But old Popeye had some damn good backgrounds.

Seems like Looney Tunes is going that way, too.

Why would kids today be watching cartoons from 60 years ago when they can just be watching cartoons that are coming out now and are actually relevant to their lives and upbringing?

That's what I'm saying. Like our generation knows about these characters because of syndication but we don't care about these characters enough to put them on for our kids or show up for any reboots or whatever. It's stuff boomers are nostalgic over.

There's still the odd one that still feel a bit relevant like Scooby-Doo.

I think all of us here did, but I feel like that just harkons back to TC's original question. Did we watch those cartoons because we actually liked them, or was it because that's what was on TV? How many years did we watch those shows before CN actually got a decent amount of original programming? Kids these days don't need to watch reruns of Looney Tunes while they wait for something else to air on primetime since they have streaming services and YT series that are showing what they actually want on demand.

It's just not a good part of their lives.

That's overall what I'm saying yeah.

Now to compare I think Looney Tunes overall has kept itself relevant. They still release new shows and they still overall have a bit of presence. It helps that personally I enjoyed those old cartoons as a kid and that's probably a factor as to why it keeps going.

Now it's nowhere near as much as when we were kids but they're still around. My kid even liked and knows them and she's only 3.

But stuff like most Hanna-Barbera stuff seems like a tougher sell. I was never particularly invested of them as a kid to begin with. So without syndication and no real demand for a reboot or whatever I wonder if it's not common for younger people to know who they are at all.

Tom and Jerry is top tier but definitely not timeless with the golliwog maid and the references to WW2 during the episodes that aired during that period.

Yeah it's interesting thinking about how much the internet has changed pop culture with stuff like cartoons and movies. I knew the Jetsons because it was on syndication in the 90s in Australia. It's not like I specifically seeked it out.

During that time people were quoting and referencing movies like Pretty Woman, A Few Good Men and The Fugitive for years.

Just a different time. TV just allowed stuff to have a longer shelf life I guess.

When people say something is "Calarts" they usually mean a certain style though, not the actual Calarts school.

It is just a really dumb genre term like "JRPG" (I.e. there are JRPGs not made in Japan like Undertale and RPGs made in Japan which are not JRPGs like Dark Souls).
