there's definitely a difference between a movie not making sense and a movie just grabbing random thoughts out of the air- which exactly applies to this movie.
I don't agree that it's random. It's not a particularly deep or confusing movie, but nothing in it is random.

When people here say Step Brothers do they mean the Will Ferrell comedy? Cause Ive actually never seen it lol. Is it actually that confusing? I always figured it was yet another regular Will Ferrell comedy.

Oh, the books annihilation is based on are quite good.

I read them all in like a week once when I was really sick and sleep deprived, added to the experience tbh.
I watched the movie when it came out, and read the book a little over a year ago.

I actually like the movie more than the book. It's fairly different.

I didn't think the movie is confusing. Felt like it was pretty straight forward. Including the ending.

Donnie Darko, Momento, and Tenant are fair. For DD they had to come out with a directors cut to actually explain things.

At one point I remember they stopped the film to start drawing a series of charts.

I guess I don't understand what you mean by random, then. The main character is having an existential crisis of identity. A scene where his face comes off seems thematically relevant to that, yeah?

I love this movie, very underrated imo. Wahlberg is actually funny in it. There's really not that much to understand, it's an absurdist comedy with heavy existentialist themes. There's a lot of very shallow philosophy references in it, which I liked because I was majoring in philosophy when it came out.
That makes sense because I suck at philosophy. But maybe I'd understand it better if I rewatched it now since I was about 14 when I saw it.

Venom and Eternity. The cinematic manifesto of lettrism, by its founder. I vibed with it when I was younger but I have no idea what it means or what it's about.

Also Lynch's Dune. I actually like it more than the new version because it's a lot more fun trying to figure out what's going on, and failing. It's also much more visually interesting. Freddie Francis is one of the great artists in his field, and that film is easily the most incredible work he did in color.

Maxim back in the day gave the original Dune movie one of my all-time favorite roasts (here's my best attempt to quote from memory):

"The US Geological Survey maintains a comprehensive list of all the arable land in the continental United States. Based on their latest findings, they have determined that it is not possible to grow the amount of pot necessary for this movie to make the slightest bit of sense. There simply isn't room."
