in the public eye. i'm sure he was mostly always popular, and still is, with the skating community

but for about 10 years there, he was popular with everyone, not just people in the skating community

and then he just kinda went back to only being popular with them again

I wouldn't say he was super popular, late 90s culture just favored "extreme sports" and "punk rock culture".

I think that says more about popularity of the sport than it does for him

most people still know him though

I think it had something to do with the game Even the demo seemed super popular I dont think that was the only thing, but one of the many things that helped him with more mainstream popularity

That's number 3.
It's pretty dang good. 4 is perfect for the time but missing walking in retrospect, making it nearly perfect.

This.

Extreme sports got popular in the 90s, which led to the games getting made. The games made him more of a mainstream figure even to people who didn't know who he was in the real world.

I've heard people from England who still call him "Tony Hawks" because they think that's his name because they remember "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater", not the actual guy.

OK, I'm starting to get back in the groove. I'm getting over the 25k mark consistently now. Haven't broken the 50k barrier yet, but I'm starting to remember some combos. And hit a couple 10k+ tricks. So I'll try again a bit later.

It's all about those lines. You gotta flip trick, grab and land in a grind, then flip and grab while you grind.
When 2 added manuals, that changed things.
When 3 added reverts, it really changed things.

Tony Hawk was an extremely popular skater in the community, what made him a household name was the X games taking off coinciding with him pulling off the first* 900 in 1999(they even let him have as many attempts at it as he wanted - in an official competition since he kept getting so close. it seemed like the other skaters were all for it too) and the video games. People who have never touched a skateboard played them.

Tony Hawk seems like a cool, chill guy and a respectable celebrity figure.

If you want to get your mind blown with some real shit, listen to any interview with Rodney Mullen. He created an absurd number of tricks and pioneers a ton of shit and at the same time has this sort of zen like personality and would never actually buy into the hype created about him even if it's actually deserved.

*of course people claim they did it earlier, etc

I remember being a kid playing tony hawk and then being let down when I saw in in tv and was like "wait these guys can't actually do a triple backflip kickflip from a skyscraper and land on a rail at the bottom and then manual to another half pipe to do another series of tricks" lol

You should check out modern action sports. It's getting crazy, especially snowboarding. These snowboarders are doing quadruple corks these days when a double was coveted like a decade ago.
The progression is awesome. My lady quickly got into it and sees the year over year progression.
I believe in realistic settings we could potentially see some Tony hawk stuff. I mean, a 1080 has happened in competition.

Yeah I don't know what it is but lots of stuff has progressed wildly in the last decade. I do remember recently watching some dude skateboarding and he was doing stuff that i thought was previously impossible. I think having easy access to videos of other people doing things has allowed to people to learn and progress faster and refine their talents more. I've gotten massively better on the drums over the last few years just watching YouTube videos, instagram reels, etc and just copying whatever they do until I've got it. Much easier and quicker than paying for lessons

Yeah.

The 2000s is when sakteboarding really started to penetrate the mainstream and Tony Hawk was, and still is, the face of skateboarding.
