When it comes to work I can deal with mean spirited, but can't really deal with stupid. So stupid irks me more. Irl I can easily ignore both.

Mean. "Stupid" in most contexts of people can mean that they are generally just gullible or that they are actually ignorant-- ie, they don't know stuff that they really don't have a reason to bother learning.

Mean people actually generally mean to be rude and bring down the general mood, and often times, they don't even care why they are doing it. It's just inconsiderate, and to be honest, it gets old.

Mean people tend to only be that way with stupid people around.

No they do not. Mean people tend to be mean first, before you even factor in the other types of people around them. What's especially frustrating are people that even have the mentality that people like you seem to think about "mean" people. Mean people are not necessarily smarter than other people around them. Even if they were, that does not give them the right to be mean to people that aren't as knowledgeable. Those sort of thoughts are what lean into rude managers and the lone nerd that sits in the backroom being an ass to everyone because he makes straight As while being blissfully unaware that just because he makes straight As doesn't mean that other people in the room aren't actively doing the same, so (s)he makes him/herself nigh unapproachable because of some random chip on their shoulder where they somehow think everyone around them is so dumb that this sort of behavior is warranted because they are just oh so stressed about the stupid people around them.

yea i absolutely agree with everything in your post. Have seen that before. Some of the mean thinking their the smartest person in the room and being real mean to people they believe aren't as smart as them.

I've dealt with infinitely more stupid people than mean people. They are the bane of my existence.

Must be a Carolina thing as I live in NC and mean spirited is kind of rare here. Don't get me wrong there are some, but they seem to be in the minority.

absolutely, stupid people make up for it with bluster and being loud. being angry and mean is a shortcut to that.

also people who are mopey and sad and pissed off all the time tend to buy into the idea that ignorance is bliss and that's why they're never happy -- they're just so smart. i think the opposite is true.

If you say so. From my experience every coworker or manager or teacher with a reputation for being mean has never had any problem being friendly to me.

This actually sounds worse than you think. Because generally rude people are not associated with being more intelligent. They also tend to fall under more psychopathic behaviors. Even more incidentally, psychopaths tend to get along with each other better than non psychopathic people.

While mean people are not necessarily the case, when you're so mean that it's more of a reputation, that's never a good sign.

Plain and simple, being nice is more useful in most situations and nets more useful results all around. People that don't recognize this are generally pretty dumb.

Easily mean spirited people. You can reach stupid people, or ignorant people. Or wrong people. If they're otherwise decent.

Not so much with dicks. Dicks are dicks.

I think a big problem with society today is people have confused opinions and politics with personalities and realistic expectations in general.

If x does or says or thinks y, ever, they must be shit and be written off, because only the purest and most agreeable can possibly be decent. That kind of thinking strikes me as a mean spirited person that's only ever right accidentally, and then for the wrong reasons.

It's more about cutting up people that are incorrect or ignorant than about actually being for what the other person isn't. Or God forbid, trying to actually change minds.

Don't misunstand me, some people are unreachable. Many, even. But nobody has ever reached anyone with malice or vitriol. If that's all you're about and you don't care to change minds, own it. If you do care maybe change tactics.

Quite a leap in logic to assume I use fear or intimidation tactics. Regardless, I'm talking all approaches imaginable, I've seen it about all. The phrase "you can't fix stupid" is scary accurate.

They both irritate me equally, but for different reasons.

I dont tolerate mean people. Not in the slightest. They always want to say nasty things but theyre cowards they back down every time when confronted.

Stupid people can be more annoying, but the fact that they don't mean any harm is a huge saving grace.

I can deal with mean-spirited a-holes with ease.

Stupid, incompetence people are the worst in all forms. From drivers to co-workers and all in-between. I Pray to God that He liberates me from them daily.

And knowing how you're acting I expect you to go with the "well it didn't make any sense so I just pretended it wasn't there" rather than saying you didn't get it or it was unclear.

I couldn't say. There are probably several reasons someone could. None of which are good.

Stupid people by far. With mean people I just chuckle and hope they find whatever it is theyre looking for. But if were talking like street smarts, that gets so annoying and aggravating.

You definitely implied it. Which is why I said even what I said initially. I am not the one that threw that out there. You said :

You quite literally blame stupid people for supposed mean people.

That is not what was said though. Mean people generally do not have entirely logical reasons for being mean. In many cases it's hyper defensiveness, can simply be psychological deviancy, any other type of disorders that can lead to them misbehaving. There is a difference between someone being grumpy for the day and a person that IS mean. A stupid and mean person can exist, but that's not what was asked in the topic. It was asked if you'd rather deal with someone that is stupid or mean. Just because they aren't mutually exclusive doesn't mean a question can't be asked about the scenarios where they are-- which is what the topic is about.
