Its always weird to me when someone takes a well known action adventure game and lumps it in with RPGs.

Grandia. It released in North America in 1999 and was my favorite PS1 game. Such a great RPG with a unique spin on turn based combat.

Of the options provided, for me it's Lunar but my favorites for the PS1/Saturn era were Wild ARMs, Breath of Fire IV, Grandia, and Final Fantasy IX.

I agree with this. FFT is an amazing RPG that gets my vote here but only because FFIX was released in 2000/2001 and doesn't technically count.

I was thinking this as well. I've spent countless hours on other rpgs and have had tons of fun on other rpgs, but this game is a ton of fun that is hard to not sink even an hour into when you planned on grinding for like fifteen minutes.

It's so charming and really fun. I'm even playing it in japanese on saturn with a guide.

Final Fantasy VII is (in my opinion) the best Japanese console RPG of the late 90s

best western PC RPG of the late 90s would be either Baldur's Gate or Planescape:Torment

you take the role of link. You play the role of link (hint hint).

you talk to characters and you have dialog boxes.

you equip items and improve your abilities.

you have stats (such as magic points), you have to build your stats, etc.

I'm still not seeing anything close to an RPG with your first two points, as adventure games have that also.

The last two are debatable. You can improve abilities in a lot of non RPGs and being able to improve them doesn't suddenly turn the game into an RPG.

In fact, you do the last two points in Tiger Woods Golf, does that make it an RPG?

I guess you need to play as a shitty sprite with a disproportionately big head and a team in order to be a 90s RPG

I know you are trying to sharpshoot me, but the series you are snidely referring to stopped using tile sprites in the 80's... (except for a few ports)

It fallout 2 for me because of its simplicity (easy combat and easy to follow story. Not much dialogue or lore dumps compared to other rpg) and the post post apocalyptic setting. Plus i love its ambient tracks. I sometimes just daydream about numerous stuff while listening to it and not even pay attention to the game.

Im not generally a fan of high fantasy rpgs and ones with too much writing (like planescape torment has both of these. Tho i dropped because i got bored of reading the dialogues). I doubt I'll ever play baldur gate and ice wind Dale based on screenshots I've seen of their dialogue prompts. Others like it are a no go for the most part.

I'm actually struggling to be immersed with baldur gate 3 as well. Haven't played it in the past 4-5 days. Gotta be related to the talky bits and the music doesn't make me feel anything really. I also already forgot its entire story so I lost motivations to continue
