Do you like tactical combat? It's like XCom but fantasy and a little bit deeper with all the spells and abilities.

I've seen so many people talking about respeccing Shadowheart that I finally did it. I realized I've literally never used any of the trickery domain abilites and I've made the game way harder than it should have been.

although this does feel like a more fitting time to change her to life domain so I guess I RP'd by accident

Major spoilers ahead to answer the last post:

Whiters, who is revealed to be Jergal, the original God of Death, says that Mind Flayers have no souls. Omeluum and the Emperor are mind flayers who have retained memories of their former hosts, for the Emperor he recalls the memories of Baldurian but the emperor is not Balduran but a mind flayer who retains his memories.

I don't know if we've already talked about a special Act 1 chest Chest of the Mundane that acts sort of like a Bag of Holding, counting anything put inside it as a <1 weight item but I think it's really less hassle to dump all your 'maybe keep's in the Traveller's Chest at camp

Also if you feel like you're heavier than you should be, it might be arrows. They're up to 0.4 weight per arrow

I'm a little proud of myself for figuring this out.

So at one point late in the game you get a temporary companion who is a high level Cleric.

High level Clerics can cast Divine Intervention one time.

DI can summon a legendary item.

I'm never seeing this chick again.

So pop that, have her throw her weapon, and:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/5/3/AABUaRAAExmp.jpg
Free legendary.

It doesn't actually have the Fire, those are gloves, but I think the Radiant is built in.

he seems pretty damn useful to me. i've been without him lately after i got an OP fighter companion but i do miss him for unlocking doors and disarming traps. i've had to do them w/ my Tav character who is not specialized in that sorta thing so i end up failing the skill checks more often.

that said i don't mind save scumming till i succeed haha.

Welcome to DnD. Clerics have been ridiculously OP since like the 90's. Their iteration in BG3 is pretty tame compared to BG 1 and 2.

I've gotten by without him for large parts of act 1 where I was do-gooding and didn't want him disapproving, you basically use up more kits is all. But he's a great combatant as Thief too

Haven't touched Astarion as I run Thief on myself already. But there's no vital content locked behind lockpick/stealth checks, and most locked chests/doors have keys that you can loot from guards corpses, or a lever somewhere that triggers the lock.

There's also the Knock spell. Or, after you get strong enough, just bashing them open. (Which I now typically do with Karlach just to conserve my Thieves Tools lol)

i think the trickery domain isn't that good in BG3. the duplicate can be targeted and destroyed easily, and i think can't move. it never stays alive long enough because it gets targeted by everyone and downed quickly, since it has to be pretty close to the enemies. i respec'd shadowheart into tempest since i found a bunch of electricity equipment and so far she's been pretty good

does bashing them open destroy or damage the items inside?

Yeah apparently trickery is great in table top but didn't translate super well into BG3. That said, clerics still have war, tempest, and light domains which are all great. And even their less powerful domains can still use spirit guardians.

I personally can't stand Astarion, so I keep him away. My first playthrough I was a Ranger/Rogue, so I took care of all the lockpicking myself. This second playthrough I'm a Sorcerer, though, so I just gave Shadowheart a level of Rogue so she can do the lockpicking. She's held up fine so far, most of the way through Act 1.

I was doing a no tadpole run, but it became apparent to my MC that basically the parasite is a means to an end against the gods who keep turning the lives of my companions in negative ways. My MC being chaotic good in that sense is braving a hypothetical sacrifice while Astarion is my right-hand compadre whod sell his soul to the deepest dark for the party who he has grown to love.

Laezel was a hard sell for RPing tadpole use for me lol eventually I think we just came to terms with video game logic while I cook up something better >_>

.at this point me and my party just ignore any conversation trees regarding getting rid of the tadpoles since we know well have to burn out together eventually

yeah I figured out after a while that the tadpoles weren't getting removed any time soon so I just started eating all the specimens on my MC. I didn't want to subject shadowheart or karlach or gale to it since I figured they had enough on their minds. although most of the powers aren't very useful for a melee character since my regular attacks do more damage and the other abilities are very situational. the charm on hit is nice but only works about 5-10% of the time

although at the real end of act 2 the asshole mind flayer kept trying to put the parasite in my eye and I had to reload like 5 times.

It's not that the powers aren't helpful for melee, it's that you take every power you can get to maximize Cull the Weak.

Spoilers on the consequences of tadpole use

There isn't any. The game doesn't even acknowledge you never even unlocking the tadpole skill tree UI, and the dialogue you'll get treats you as if you're using the powers even if you're not. I can confirm this firsthand since I've done a run where I used a tadpole every time I could, and a run were I never used it once and never unlocked the UI. The only reason not to use the tadpole powers is if you're deeply committed to your head cannon RP, otherwise you just miss out on extra gameplay.

The powers are a mixed bag, some are quite good, others are more situational. There is an interesting choice to be made if you want to load one char with all the tadpole powers to make use of the cull the weak power (If you bring an enemy to an HP value that is lower than the amount of powers you've unlocked, they instantly die), or if you want to spread them around your party members.

One potential addendum that I've heard but can't corroborate:

If you take a certain number of parasites you won't be able to turn down partial ceromorohosis and/or it makes the Wisdom save to resist it harder. Not sure why you would if you took that many in the first place but there it is.
