I got called in for Jury Duty today. Has anyone actually went through it all?

My work is weird in the sense that I don't have any days allocated for it (like a week's worth of pay). I can get no deduction in pay as long as I work part of the week.

Luckily I have a short trial that should end by Friday. I have some anxiety about this. First time doing this all the way, and I feel really bad about leaving work for coworkers, and having more work when I come back next week. I also just came back from last week.

Ive been seated twice. First time was for an assault case where both parties were black and the entire jury was white from the other side of town. The deliberations were intense as the guy next to me was a full blown racist and should not have been on the jury but the questions didnt weed him out. The guy had also had a stroke a couple years before and had to have it explained to him on the second day which of the little blacks girls is the defendant and which was the public defender. Fun times.

I actually served on a jury. A teacher on trial for abusing a student. We found him guilty. It sucked. They pay you s*** while you miss work.

I got summoned a second time. I had no intention of going through it again. It was for a tobacco lawsuit. I filled out the questionaire with over the top answers.

I got a letter saying thanks/no thanks.

Get out of it if you can.

Ive been called in twice.

The first time, I just sat around for 4 hours and then they said I could go home.

The second time, I was selected. I was on a jury that went for 2 1/2 days. It was interesting to see how the process works, but at the same time, Ive had my fill and dont wanna do it ever again.

They do pay for your gas, right?

Was it covered with your work? Cause you could have said it's a hardship and not go if they weren't gonna cover your wages.

Easiest way to get out of jury duty without saying you're racist is to invoke jury nullification and explain when the lawyers try to call you out on it.

I know that, but I could never do that.

Getting out of jury duty is not my concern at the moment, as long as I get paid from my work. It would be a hardship if I couldn't. I straight up told the judge today I wasn't sure and had to get back to HR and my boss. I have to get back to him in an hour.

I actually save money by going to jury duty vs going to work. It's also a very short trial .I just felt really bad about leaving my coworkers with work, and hope that I don't get even more work next week when I come back.

I am a little nervous about doing it. It's not gonna be a cake walk.

Speaking about getting out of jury duty. This one dude came in late (around 9.. but that's fine, nobody was called anyway at that time). Dude faked a very obvious loud audible wheezing sound twice, and was told to step aside into the hallway. He then asked on a very normal voice of he was excused from Jury Duty, and they said he would only be deferred by 3 months. Lmao. If he just waited and got in line to argue for hardship. He's get 12 months.

I was on a jury trial once, like 4 or 5 days for a minor fender bender where a taxi driver and aspiring model was asking for like $100,000 in potential lost wages from not being able to do modeling due to alleged whiplash. We gave him like $4000 after calculating on our own how much taxi wages he lost out on by being out of work for a couple months. It was insanely boring, you basically just sit there for hours on end while the lawyers run around asking questions and getting told off by the judge and bringing on confusing witnesses who don't seem to add anything useful to the trial.

Ill answer these too, since I went.

At least for Illinois, I received something like $18 per day. It wasnt even enough to pay for my parking in the city (Chicago), let alone gas. They did pay for food, through.

My job has a time off option for jury duty. It is covered like a vacation day, only it doesnt count as a vacation day.

I've been summoned twice one for county on for federal. Got selected at the county one. Child sexual abuse... Was not easy to sit through. Found the defendant guilty after two days of deliberation... Was very surreal seeing him sentenced in front of us and taken away. The victim and her family were all crying.

Had to call every Sunday for six weeks for the federal but luckily never had to go (was a long drive).

I've received jury summons three times so far, but have never actually gotten to the point of serving on a jury. First time I called in the night before and was told I didn't have to show up, second time I sat in a room for hours watching reruns of Ghost Whisperer (it was on the TV in the room and I didn't know I could bring stuff in with me) before being told the case had settled and I could leave, and then the third time was during Covid lockdowns and jury service was suspended statewide.

I have a co-worker who received a summons for federal jury duty. Her son recently had an eye surgery and she helps take care of him as he recovers, so she is really concerned that they wont see that as a reason for her to be excused. Estimated trial length is 13 weeks.

I've only been seated on a trial once. The trial was for a man who had sexually abused like 7 different girls ranging from 5 to 11 years old, over several years. The 5 year old was his niece and she was in her early 20's when the trial happened. It was fucked because she confronted him on Facebook and he was saying that she knows she liked it...

He's in jail for the rest of his life. The deliberation lasted less than 5 minutes. Wish I could remember his name though to link an article or something.

Anyway, my jury duty lasted a week and a half for that one and my job paid for my hours. IIRC, if your job doesn't pay you, then the court does. But it's usually an insultingly low amount. So I hope your trial doesn't last long

A lot of what makes the trials last so long it's listening to all of the witness' testimony. Both the prosecution and the defense have to take turns asking their questions. If it's something like one person suing another person, I'd imagine that goes faster

I've been sent the letter quite a few times but haven't ever been picked. I've gotten as far as being questioned by the judge/lawyer but i have a natural bias towards professionals so they excused me. I told them I'd take a cop's opinion on the law over a stranger the same way I'd take a recipe from a chef over the stranger.

Ive been pretty lucky that the cases I was supposed to show up for jury selection was settled out of court.

If you do get selected, you only get compensated with like $30 a day, which is bullshit. Ill probably have to dip into my PTO to make up for the shortfall.

Funny thing is, I never get it near the court near my town (~5 miles away) I've been getting it 25 miles away and not at the next places.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I dunno. You're playing with fire. Why take the risk of being fined or imprisoned when you can respond and have a 50% of getting called in. And once you get called in, there's a good chance you can be dismissed due to financial hardship .
