it's going to get depleted within 7 years. then benefit cut for all who happen to be on the program because republican's don't want the easy fix (raising the payroll tax cap) because it goes against beliefs.

millenial and gen Z are especially screwed.

It and similar programs were always about one specific generation of entitled lazy people wanting to make other generations support them. It was never intended to last beyond their own generation.

The myth that social security "can't last" has been drilled into us so we'll accept when politicians (mostly conservatives) attempt to cut it in the future. The rules are entirely made up. There is no insurmountable problem that SS faces because humans literally make the rules for how it's funded. Never accept any legislator's word who says we need to cut it.

What are you even talking about? Payroll taxes are poor people taxes, Republicans don't mind raising those. Reagan raised payroll taxes when he was president.

All it takes is a Republican president, a republican senate and a republican house and SSN along with a bunch of other social safety net programs are done for, they're still cutting away at them under Democrats but once they are removed from power Republicans will speed run it, they don't know nor care about governing the only thing they know how to do is spread hatred, cut regulations and flood more money from the public to their and their donor's pockets, it sounds like hyperbole and generation but it's legit all they know how to do and all they want to do.

I maintain the firm belief that they won't ever do this. A huge chunk of the Republican base need Social Security to live, and if Republicans hold power when it is taken away, no amount of Fox News Kool-Aid will convince their voters that Democrats did it somehow. What's more, the cuts would be devastating to our entire society.

They can (sadly) keep cutting away at other things in the name of evil and profit, but Social Security won't be touched.

I want to believe it but the Republican voter base has been brainwashed so heavily by right wing propaganda like Fox News, Newsmax, One America News, various right wing social media personalities and the politicians that Republicans in control of the government fully can cut social programs and tell their supporters their lives are miserable because of Democrats and they'll believe it, just look at how much of a losing issue Abortion is for them yet they're not only pushing to outlaw it in the entire country but also jailing doctors and sentencing women who have them or even a misscharage to either life in prison or flat out death and every time there's a story about a rape victim being forced to carry their unwanted child to term they still demonize the victim, demand they get no help whatsoever and in the same breath say their child a gift from god no matter how they came to be and they need to accept responsibility for it.

Even when all Republicans did during Trump's years especially when they had full control of the government was enrich the rich their supporters still cheered for them and when they caused a government shutdown with Trump taking full reponsibility for it on live TV while Democratic leaders smiled at how stupid he was to do that, Republican outlets and supporters still blamed the Democrats for it.

Like I said, I want to believe Republicans in full power wouldn't dare risk pissing off their supporters by stripping away more rights and entitlements from them but there are far to many examples over the years that show us that Republicans are practically immune to consequences for obvious corruption and flat out evil actions, the information empire they've built over decades molding these people into perfect drones who exist only to give them power has taken route and even so, Republicans still will not be completely satisfied until they no longer need the drones and can drop all pretense they care about them.
