It surpassed the record set by WrestleMania 32. The technical world record is WCW/NJPW's North Korean event but the audience was forced to attend by the DPRK government.

Thats good for them since they did it in only 5 years.

I feel bad for the fans having to watch a Jericho vs Ospreay match though. Jericho can barely hold his own in tag matches nowadays lol

I believe the measurement is based only on tickets covering both nights, not just one or the other. It's very rare people buy tickets for only one night. It's saying 90k tickets that cover both nights were sold, not just a combination of night 1 and night 2 tickets. If anything, tickets covering two nights would logically sell worse than one night, since it's a larger time commitment.

There aren't 90,000 seats in the arena for the WWE. They probably can't fit more that 75,000 in the arena at ultra max capacity. The arena holds just under 68,000 for a football game, but you can add a few thousand more seats for wrestling. But I sincerely doubt there is any floor plan that will add 22,000 more seats.

Ed Sheeran's concert housed 77k (almost 78k) people and had a decent bit of room to spare, so it's not impossible. That said, I'm interested in more details.

EDIT: Like said, the amount of people who buy tickets for only one night are in the minority, but it will be interesting to see how high the ticket number grows, to get an idea of how many people they expect to fit and how many did just buy tickets for one night, for some reason.

EDIT EDIT: There's also the argument that Wembley fits more people, in general, which raises the question... Would WM sell more if it was in a larger arena? It's impossible to know, really.

By "largest paid attendance" one would assume that an event paid for by a government where all of its attendees were forced to be there would kind of not count tbf

I see people are debating whether or not the North Korean government forcing people to attend a wrestling show should count as the largest attendance.

Here's a simple way to rephrase the topic title: AEW drew a larger crowd than the WWE ever has.

It makes sense too.

I mean isn't this their first EVER show in the UK period? - so that's going to draw a lot of fans to start with.

It's a summer pay per view event, and AEW is experiencing a big bump in popularity, having just created a whole new weekly show and several other media properties.

AEW has also been hyping the shit out of this, and really making a big marketing impression with this.

So really, if WWE were doing their first show in a new region, and it was a Wrestlemania level event while they were lucky to be in the midst of an uptick... I can see that being the case too.

AEW is just reaping the rewards of several factors all going their way.

I'm not going to go all NintenDOOMED on WWE. This doesn't mean that AEW... what do they call their Monday night show? ...is going to defeat Raw in the ratings each and every single week from now on. But, for what it's worth, at this juncture, AEW has bested WWE for attendance.

AEW has a Wednesday and Saturday main show, a taped show on Fridays, and some behind the scenes/reality show type stuff I don't care about.

WWE just has the biggest brand power, and the McMahon family are ruthless... I don't think they're going anywhere, but I'm glad to see a promotion that isn't McMahon affiliated do well.

It's mainly because WWE hasn't gone to Wembley... Lately, at all? because they're being stubborn and want the UK to help pay for the show. Both WWE and AEW's biggest shows typically sell out, or close to it, and AEW basically got the record via... Going to the biggest stadium first. It's a record, no doubt, but it doesn't actually mean anything when it comes to "wrestling wars."

That's like that a boxer didn't take the championship because they didn't want to put in the time to train. If the WWE wants the accolade of the largest attendance record in history, let them go back to the UK next year and pay to perform in Wembley.

$18-$1,180

The ticket prices in AEW seem to be generally lower, but the front row is about 1.6k USD

But I think WM usually has golden ticket VIP sales for that where you get access to Axess etc etc that go for 2k.

Do you have a source on the 80k? Everything I can find says 125-127k was the official capacity, and it far exceeded that in several cases, sometimes by more than double.

I'm not arguing, you're probably right, I just can't find it, myself.

EDIT: Oh, I see now. The 125k was standing capacity, and that's the only number most sites list, so that's why that's what I keep seeing. So yeah, what you said makes sense.
