What is HoloCure?

HoloCure is a free fangame that plays like Vampire Survivors but features Hololive Virtual YouTubers as the playable characters.
The gameplay does have some notable differences to VS with each character having their own individual skills.

The latest update coming with the Steam release is Holohouse a new gameplay mode featuring additional minigames.

What's Hololive?

It's one of the biggest Virtual Youtuber groups in the world with talents based in Japan, NA, EU and Indonesia.
Their content is the usual streamer content only with an avatar replacing their IRL face. So a lot of gameplay stream, just chatting, singing karaoke, drawing art etc.
They saw a sharp uptick in popularity in 2020 and have gone from strength to strength since then

The game was already available for free prior. If you've played the game before, downloading it on Steam will still let you continue using your old save file.

This new update sees the addition of the HoloID characters.
If you liked Vampire Survivors give this a shot. In any case it's free.

Oh, look at that, it finally hit Steam. I rate this pretty highly among VS clones.

It's actually kinda wild just how much the game has improved since the first version.

didnt play when gen 2 came out, and apparently they changed how saves are made in that update so i seem to have lost all my progress

If the last time you played was that far back, you can make money much faster now and get back to where you were super fast.

The Good:
-Heavy focus on the uniqueness of characters (and there are a lot of them), each girl starts with a unique weapon that no one else can get and three unique skills that do not take up a passive slot.
-Weapon fusion system is superior to the weapon evolution in VS.
-It's fucking cute.

The Bad:
-Questionable gameplay decisions that often force you to dodge practically unbeatable mosnters when you can barely see the screen due to all the shit on it.
-Most stages feel cramped.

All in all its is probably the best VS clone out there

In some aspects I do like it more than VS.
Though it's mostly due to all the references to the Vtubers that have been added.

For those who like the lore there's a lot going on, though I think even if I wasn't big on Hololive, the sprites still look pretty appealing.

And its not like the characters are why anyone likes any of the other games in this genre so you dont really need that knowledge here. I cant tell you the name of a single VS character and I 100%ed the base game

I recognized very few of the cast outside of some EN people and Korone.

True, though I guess this one gets a little more involved due to the streams where the Vtubers play their own characters.

WHAT I didn't know this.

Anyway as an Indonesian, I'm very happy they added all the Hololive ID branch girls at the same time! Releasing them on our Independence Day also makes it feel extra special.

Finally finished a stage with each of them last night. Early impressions:

Moona: I like Main Weapons that have a boomerang effect AND big hitbox, so I really like her Main Weapon. It's weird how there's so little description about her Ulti, but it works pretty well and it's pretty straightforward.
But she has very few internal survival tools, and combined with her relatively slow and short-ranged basic attack, I got carried away and died with her a few times.

Risu: HAHA NUTS GO BRR
I like her crowd control ability and somehow I got the "Over 9,000" Achievement with her? I don't know what even happened. Fun to use.

Iofi: Surprisingly, I like her better than I thought I'd do. Her melee main attack is really fast and reliable. And I'm not sure about the exact mechanics behind her Special, but it seemingly just pauses the whole game while some gameplay effects still run for a bit?
Her Awakened weapon is also really good since it quickly creates pools of paint faster than baseline Lava Bucket.

Reine: She's apparently really good for coin farming, though I haven't really tried to grind with her. Her Special is surprisingly powerful and really flexible since you have better control of its timing than most other Specials. She also has internal crit tools, and I do like crit builds, so I'm looking forward to using her more.

Anya: Huh, she's seemingly built for the Couch Potato achievement (other than Fauna). She also has an attack sprouting from the ground, just like Fauna.

But I like using her more dynamically, stopping by when I need healing (really easy to access as long as you're careful with the positioning) and moving away and repositioning when needed.

Ollie: Probably has one of the weirdest new mechanic yet. Not exactly sure how the Undead status works and stacks yet, but it's... interesting. One thing I don't really like is that the Hololive Merch drops from her Skill makes me want to gather all of them but it doesn't have any stacking effect, it just refreshes the timer...which would be fine, if it didn't also hurt her for a bit.
Also lol at the reference in her Special.

Kobo: Not a big fan of her Praise/Tantrum Skills since...well, her Praise bar loses half its stack when she gets hit, but she doesn't have any built-in invul/avoid tools. And sometimes it's hard to notice when it's activated anyway if you're not really paying attention.
And Tantrum feels like a needlessly complicated stacking effect since the stacks increase the percentage of activation rather than its efficacy. Also, its heal doesn't stack, making it a very risky Skill to activate.
Her Special is fun though, I like how it even gives the underwater effect to the Ochame Kinou jingle playing when you open Holozon boxes.

Kaela: Surprisingly fun and plays noticeably differently to all other characters with the mining mechanic. And really nice reference to her gaming habits lol. It's such a nice 'coincidence' that we get a blacksmith character who's also a big Minecraft grinder, so the hammer has a double meaning.

Zeta: Honestly, wasn't really interested in her at first since I know the least about her as a vtuber. But her invincibility Skill and Special are really reliable. Got a win in my first try (granted it was only at the normal Halloween Castle stage, but still). Really needs to pick up weapons with big hitboxes though, since her main one just shoots in a very concentrated line.

Other observations:
- Gelora Bung Yagoo is fun enough, doubly so since it's named after the biggest stadium in Indonesia, but MAN... it's so hard to see the stage's boundaries at a glance, I died a couple times since I misjudged the boundaries. It looks like as if I could still go through them. :T

- Lol at Piki Piki Piman getting reworked AGAIN. This effect is so different from the previous one...I miss the recharge effect.

- I like that one of the stamps now give a percentage to erase projectiles, the projectiles are very annoying here.

- I haven't started the Hard mode of the Halloween Castle stage, it's scaring me lol

- The Holo House is pretty neat, I like how we can just steal some fish that the other girls catch lol. Why are some things SO expensive though. I guess it's for the hardcore players.

- It's nifty that we can roll more than 1 character at a time. And the upgrades being categorized also help with the navigation. Good UI reworks in many places.

- The new Sausage weapon seems...okay. Good close-range melee option if you need it. But I'm really happy since it's a reference to my oshi.

Whew, Reine's coin gathering, looks like Irys can take a rest.
Was worried at first as her feathers made me wonder if she'd be too similar to Mumei, but on the whole each character has felt unique enough.

Halloween Myth stage cleared.
Body Pillow is useless these days compared to Breastplate.
The Super Collabs are so neat, though we limited to just one per run?

Finally got around to playing this. Pleasantly surprised with it. I definitely get the hype around it now, it is a very good VS-like. Will definitely end up spending many, many hours on this one.

Finished all the achievements except Gachikoi fandom on all characters. Just finished Gachikoi on all the EN girls, so like a quarter of the way done lol

With ReGloss announced, Holocure will always have content to add.

Ugh, the difficulty spike on the second level is frustrating

Make sure you buy upgrades in the shop. Especially super attack and stamps if you didn't already (a lot of cheap stat upgrades are there too that you can afford after your first successful run)

Yeah, it's crazy. The third and fourth levels have significantly easier layout to maneuver, IMO.

I feel that if you're starting out, Fauna is a good early character with all the healing she brings to the table.

I don't know what the exact tier list is, but Irys, Mumei, Kaela and Suisei have been very strong options for me.

Other characters, often those with a weapon with narrow range I will have s lot more difficulty with.

There's just so many playstyles.

What's the deal with the golden hammer that looks like a stamp but is not one?

Golden Hammer is part of the super collabs we were discussing a little bit earlier.
It's a 3 part combo.

You got to have a collab weapon active
You collect the hammer
You get to level 50 with the right support item.

Once all the conditions are active, you can then combo your collab weapon with the item to create a super collab.

This frees up a passive item slot, but the passive effects are still active, so it becomes really useful.

I've not put much time into Holohouse, but I hear fishing is just as good as Irys farming?

Yeah some things are left unexplained for you to figure yourself but it can be frustrating. I looked up super collabs to see what the deal is. >_>

Fauna is really good for pure survivability, yeah. Throw in one or two another healing item and it'll be smooth sailing.

Fauna is also the go-to character if youre going for the achievement to beat a level without ever moving

Yeah agreed that it could do with more guidance for newcomers.

Game did start off as a very barebones VS like that for the most part was played by Hololive fans.
Early UI when the characters were just the HololiveEN cast was very different.

I guess they were just following VS's example though because it doesn't give you much to go on either a lot of times.

One thing that is noticeable, this fangame gets very infrequent updates.
But when they do come, it's often pretty sizeable.

Got Gachikoi Fandom level with Fauna, Robocosan, Risu, Reine, and Subaru. Oshi level with everyone else.

The grind is still a long way to go...

Just need to do 1 more run with Moona and then 1-2 more runs with each other ID left..
