My youngest son woke up this morning and the first thing he said: Donald Trump is just the most corrupt B Word (edited so I do not get suspended-he absolutely did not say B Word).

I chastised him for the language, but I am secretly pretty thrilled about how he has been raised.

Looking forward to reading the next indictment. Donald J. Trump is unbelievably corrupt and absolutely a criminal.

Sadly, he is smarter than much of HIS extended family as well. My immediate family is intensely Democrat, but there is an Alabama/Georgia branch of the extended family that is hard core in the bag for Trump.

One of my cousins in that branch, a rare liberal, moved to Michigan last year. She told everyone it was to take a new job, but she confided to me and my Dad that she could not stand her Mom (Dads older sister) talking about Trump any more. They lived on the same street, and apparently my Aunt would go over every day and drone endlessly about Donald Trump. My cousin just could not take any more.

That cult, sadly, is really strong.

He raised an army, admittedly it wasn't a very good one, mostly 3%ers, boogaloo boys, proud boys, etc, and then directed them to attack the Capitol.

If that doesn't count as treason then the law might as well just not even exist.

Leaked?

I think that phone call was released to exonerate people in GA so they could get ahead of any possible conspiracy election fraud charges. We know Donald Trump and co. would immediately try and blame Georgia if evidence of Trump's election fraud attempt started to come under fire.

I think they even tried to do that at first, they tried to claim it was the GA state officials that were really corrupt and trying to steal the election, right?

It was the smart thing to do, because Trump is the sort of mob boss that will shoot your wife, then bribe the cops (not with his own money, but from money extorted from others) and threaten witnesses to say you did it.
Also it's apparently the second phone call. They had gotten one from him prior that they did not record that had a bunch of bullshit so they got smarter and recorded the second phone call.

Treason requires aiding a foreign country. "[Whover...] levies war against [the US]" before foreign countries are mentioned might qualify for Trump, but I don't think that's ever been tested.

No it doesn't require aiding a foreign country. "levying war against America" is just that. A person early in the country's history was convicted of conspiracy to commit treason for doing almost exactly this but wasn't convicted of treason itself because the army never mobilized and the plans fell apart during recruitment.

If the Jan 6 crowd was made up of foreign nationals, there'd be no question that we'd consider it an act of war. But it wasn't foreign nationals, it was Americans, and that makes it Treason instead.

You're right. Interestingly, those convicted of treason for the Whiskey Rebellion were pardoned by Washington. Not a tradition we should follow.
