I appreciate that the CEO isn't interested in the studio being acquired by a larger entity.

Yeah I get that BG 3 is great but this.

as long as todd keeps giving us new editions of skyrim, bethesda will remain the goat rpg studio

I'll stick with FromSoft tbh. I don't really trust any western company to keep up the quality, not because they can't, but because the corporate culture here is almost always "Build up and sell the company" then the talent pool fragments.

That's not really the case. Ubisoft, Valve, CD Projekt, and several other major Western studios have been so adamant about not selling that the mere rumor of a hostile takeover provokes buybacks.

Valve has never even been public.

I'll agree with that because I lost a whole ass word on my sentence(was supposed to be -recent- corporate culture). But yeah, did not mean that it's impossible for a western dev to get good and stay good or independent, just that it was supposed to be a recent trend.

Even though Larian was founded in the late 90s iirc, dunno how the success of BG3 will be handled.

Honestly, not a lot. It's just a lot bigger and very much more refined. Kind of like how you never hear people raving about Witcher 1/2 any more but people still go nuts over 3. They did a thing, they did it well, and they finally hit it clear out of the park with a game they made.

Larian is the new CDProjektRed.

More thoroughly polished and bigger budget, tbqh. The writing might be a bit better overall as well.

False. Divinity Original Sin 2 often comes up as one of the greatest RPGs ever made.

Divine Divinity, Divinity 2, Original Sin 1 and 2 are all fantastic RPGs.

Dragon Commander is an RTS but it's also a good game.

Just stay away from Beyond Divinity that's the black sheep. All their other games are great.

If you're that guy who is like "Why can't Blizzard just make Diablo 2 again?" And you haven't played Divine Divinity, then you should make it a top priority.

For its type, which has now been replaced by BG3. But these games certainly aren't for everyone.

I can tell you exactly why BG3 is so great. A lot o f people right now are praising the story and characters and the battle system, but outside of that, BG3 has Immersive Sim levels of depth in its level design. There is probably a dozen ways to solve every single puzzle that comes your way. There's multiple exits and entrances inside of buildings. The verticality of the level design cannot be understated enough. You find a large keep but the front door is locked? Maybe you can try to talk to the guard and convince them to let you in. If that fails perhaps you can bulldoze your way through the gate and murderize anyone that tries to stop you. Maybe you can sneak through the rooftops and find a way into the keep from a roof access, or maybe you can explore the sewers and find a entrance leading in.

This signature open-ended level design is reminiscent of games like Deus Ex, THIEF 1+2, Dishonored, ect.

Jesus christ, just say "I like Baldur's Gate 3". Whys it always gotta be the pathetic angle
