It's weird, a lot of times they make absolutely awesome action games, other times they just completely flub the execution.

I think NieR Automata was great, but the initial playthrough is a tad bit meh as nothing much happens. Yeah, I say initial playthrough.

Im just gonna start skipping all these side missions lol. Game makes me run across the entire goddamn map to do anything but doesn't offer any shortcuts or fast travel. <_<

If a game wants me to do content, it shouldn't make it a pain in the ass to actually do. The overworld is so fucking huge for no goddamn reason. >_>

I'll probably do more of them now that I know fast travel exists and have a general idea of where everything is.

In any event the game isn't some esoteric 3deep5u thesis on existentialism. I'm sure by the time it's over I'm not going to be confused about whatever it's trying to say about the value of life/familial bonds/the purpose of living/faith/duty/self-actualizatuon or whatever the hell else it's playing at. >_>

as much as I enjoyed the game, I didn't feel like doing the side-missions were necessary for the player to get what the game was trying to say.

the game's narrative, and its themes, are pretty straightforward, which isn't a bad thing; it's just that if you're paying attention, you should get what it's about.

the side stuff might have reinforced on those themes, but idk beyond that.

I did not enjoy it when I played it. Basically forced myself to play all playthroughs because people kept telling me it got better and better. But I never felt it did. Yes I understand the themes the game was pushing. Not a matter of not "getting it". But the gameplay wasn't the greatest, and the story was not executed very well imo.

Yeah, this. I'm very much the kind of person to stop when the credits roll, and I rarely replay games these days. Everyone says it gets better than the first route, but I thought the first route was just okay. Plus, Route B seems mostly similar to the first, and I don't want to go through that again.
