They really thought it would be a good idea for the genocidal Europeans and the native Americans to both sing about how the others are a bunch of savages, barely even human, to indicate that this was all a big misunderstanding that could have been solved by better communication from BoTh SidEs.

I don't even think it's an "of its time" issue. As soon as I was old enough to grasp the deeper context I yikes'd.

The tribe contacted Disney and offered to help them with the historical details and got told to pound sand.

There's no need to give John Smith respect for anything dude literally lied about everything and fucking faked his death and that's the account they went with for the script of the movie

I was too distracted at the time by the hot characters kissing, I think it probably holds the record for most kissing in a Disney movie.

Nowadays I remember the movie less fondly

My understanding is that Disney reached out to the Jamestown Foundation who pulled out because Disney refused their requests for historical accuracy.

There's no need to have graphic on screen violence but Disney was no stranger to brutal murder at the time.

What's wild about this movie is that, at the time, the people involved seriously thought they were respecting and honoring the native Americans. Supposedly, the people at the top thought this would be a cultural milestone and have a decent shot at being the first animated film to win Best Picture.

The Lion King, they thought of as B tier status. So they put way more money and effort into promoting Pocahontas.

Thats not surprising. Usually, Disney ignores Pocahontas. As a Disney Princess Pocahontas rarely appears in anything compared to other Disney Princesses.
Some sites did spoke about how problematic the Pocahontas movie was.
