To me it speaks to a larger problem that sites that rely on ad networks to provide revenue have no investment in the impact that the stuff they allow to be shown has on the user experience. Too many places just throw some ads on their site but then don't stay on top of how those ads affect the site's usability. This in turn can lead to sites hosting ads that go beyond being obstructive and into the realm of potentially subversive. The degree of dubiousness to which ads run through these networks can get is pretty unscrupulous and unfettered.

If a site actually takes the time to curate and know what kinds of ads are being served to their platform, being proactive to ensure that the advertising is conducive to a usable website, then I could see myself giving them the benefit of the doubt but since the vast majority of ads on sites come as "set and forget" for the webmaster the only workable solution is a blanket ban on my end.

I'd argue that would have to be true for TV as well but actually that's the reason I started using YouTube Premium (the way YouTube serves ads they slam them jarringly into videos with no semblance of fluidity with respect to the video you're watching, not letting the video creator make determinations about ad placements to better suit their video's structure). So it's incongruous to make that comparison.

Ads can and do contain malware that can infect your PC.

A lot of websites do not vet for any of that in the ads they run.

No one should be blamed for wanting to protect their systems. If that includes ad-blocking, then so be it.

Ads are fine as a practice. People paying to have their product showcased is perfectly fine. What's NOT fine is that the ads on sites are intrusive, make noise when you don't want them to, block up half the screen, have malware, or just jump in front of things, forcing you to look at them even if you aren't interested in them. At that point, the ads become a roadblock to navigating the site instead of something to showcase a product.

No, they're not fine as a practice. They parasitically suck your time away at absolutely no benefit to you. They create incentives that lead to sanitized content and sensationalism. The reason Google and Facebook are collecting every iota of data on you that they possibly can is because they want to give that data to advertisers.

But they could benefit you if you actually needed the product. Like I said, the issue is that they are intrusive. Example, do you complain when you see a billboard on the highway? Chances are you don't because the billboard isn't blocking you on the road. When you are at a red light, you aren't assaulted by ads.

They are fine existing. The lack of regulation on websites is what the problem is.

I don't get it. How do people want content creators to run/maintain their sites/continue producing content? They complain when being forced to pay for paid content (see: Netflix fiasco when asking people to actually pay for it), and then complain when having to view ads for free content.

These people want content to go bankrupt to produce content for them for absolutely no gain whatsoever?

It's up to the people producing the content to decide if/how they wish to be paid for it.

They can set up paywalls, go on Patreon, sell merch, produce sponsored content, or use ads. If they want to force the ads, they can restrict the site to those without ad blockers.

If they choose to do none of those things, that's (literally) their business.

I have no problem with ad supported content in theory. But in practice the content creators seemingly don't know/don't care how bad the ad-experience is for the user that it's hard to support it.

Like I watch live TV. Ads are an accepted annoyance but it's one that a lot of people ultimately accept. If TV had an ad-experience comparable to a lot of websites, people would just stop watching or find a way to avoid ads too. But TV realizes this and has ads curated to an acceptable standard.
