She's very excited. Apparently the way she knows this was definitely for real is because he (the psychic) described the grandpa exactly how he was. She said (bits in quotes are what the psychic said):

  • He described him as "quite neat, quite gentle"
  • "the kind of person who knows a little bit about a lot of things. you tell him something and he would tell you a story"
  • he said to the mum, "you've decorated something, haven't you?" she said yes, for our nana. "oh well he says its not to his taste. he likes his own things around the house. but he likes it for her". and that's just what grandpa was like!
  • "He liked all his tools around. He had loads of things in there, but he knew where everything was."
  • "he said that your nana can be hard work. she appears ungrateful sometimes."
  • "you've had an anxious year. There's been a lot going on this year, you've had a struggle."
She was completely convinced by all of this. It actually made her cry and laugh.

So to recap, her grandpa speaks a lot of shite, likes his own space, loved his wife, had tools and knew where they were supposed to be kept. Is the most stereotypical 60+ aged stereotypical man

I cannot believe my friend who has a PhD in biomedical research fell for this shit.

It's so sad. I have a coworker who believes in this shit, and worse, thinks they sold their soul to the devil to get their "powers". I tried explaining that they're frauds and just say a lot of generic, vague shit, but she wouldn't believe me :<

I even showed her that video where they set up some "psychics" by putting false information on a website of a place they were going to visit, and all of them quoted stuff from it lol

The key question. It's also the safest question. The people who visit mediums are always going through something and the fact that they even consider this a reasonable action in the first place shows they are going to be predisposed to whatever the medium says.

Mediums feed on people who are going through some shit, inclined toward the supernatural and are looking for some comfort or stability.

The way these people exploit the bereaved is grotesque. My family falls for this. I dont make it a point to tell them its bs unless it comes up, but it makes my blood boil.

Basic cold reading techniques. What are the chances that someone visiting a medium has had a tough year, or that their grandfather owned tools?

These charlatans are at best delusional, and at worst knowing predators upon the vulnerable.

Or that a woman is her 60s might have done some decorating lately, or that a granddad liked to pretend to be knowledgeable on every subject

This reminded me of an amusing experience from my childhood. In Sunday school (its a church thing), we were reading a bible chapter where King Saul summoned the spirit of the prophet Samuel through a medium to ask for advice.

I asked the counselor how can the medium just summon Samuel to earth when he's chilling in heaven? Doesn't that kinda undermine the idea of heaven? That you can be snatched from paradise by a medium, what does that say about security?

The counselor thought for a while and replied, "God allowed this as a one-off for Saul, he never allowed this again in the rest of the bible". (Could be true, I didn't check)

I said ok and went back to reading, but I knew that answer was bs.

That's the fun thing about imaginary characters, you can make up whatever BS you want, or claim they said some shit, and say you don't have to prove it, but if the other person doesn't believe you, you can just say they're "non-believers" or they're "going to hell for not believing".

Any time I think about "psychics" preying on the vulnerable, I am reminded of when one victim stated her husband was never found, and the psychic said he was "in water", when the shocked woman said that "no, he was in the one of the Twin Towers when they fell", then the psychic tried to save face by saying that that was wrong. Wish I could find the clip.

Mediums just find the most general descriptions of people. They hope the clients go oh yes my mother WAS a bit strict, but had a good heart! Then you feel validated and come back for more.

The people that usually go to these guys are people who have severe trauma, need a leader-figure in their life, or cant think for themselves.

My ex used to go to one. Medium told her that I might possibly be the one! Then years later after we broke up, apparently she saw another medium who told her her current bf could be the one! But she might also meet other people! Wow!

Also knew someone who used a medium to try to solve the death of her dad. Things got really weird with that one.

I remember "medium" Sylvia Browne on the Montell Williams show telling a couple that their missing child was dead. A few days later, the police found the child alive and arrested the kidnapper. When Browne was confronted with this, she just said that the spirits never lie and that she stands by her viewing.

The child must be a demon or alien pretending to be their dead kid.

It wasn't a few days later. It was long enough that both Browne and the Mother had died. She never got to be properly confronted for how wrong she was and the mother died believing her daughter was dead.

The captor's name was Ariel Castro who committed suicide in prison a few years ago.

My bad, I remembered it wrong then. Sorry about that.

While Im not one to believe in mediums and stuff...how tf do you remember ALL of that? were you there taking notes like Ben Shapiro at the Barbie movie?
maaaaaaaybe its just best to let them believe what they believe in. maybe it didnt happen in the literal sense where there was a "physical" ghost standing there doing 21 questions etc
maybe it brought her some sort of peace of mind and it doesnt matter at all whether or not it actually happened

The bigger question to ask is why does your friend (hypothetically) talking to her dead grandpa offend you so much that you gotta go make a topic on gamefaqs complaining about it lol. Let her do her thing. Its not hurting anybody

Because someone emotionally manipulated her and got paid for it.
