yea, I'm hoping it's something he can fully recover from, but it's still good to hear he's in more stable condition.

I know a lot of people put a lot of hope/expectation for him to follow in his dad's footsteps, but I hope it's not something that led him to over extending himself.

Nobody knows. Tall athletes have a history of being predisposed to heart problems though. Something about how the heart has to work extra hard to get blood to the brain.

People are going to use this as fire to say that vaccines caused this, because one of the narratives to come out for a while, even before Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field is that the COVID vaccines cause heart problems.

There is likely going to still be minimal proof linking the two, but each case of heart problems, especially high profile ones, will just make these people go "I was right" just because people are having heart problems that are being reported. Even now, reading one comment section on youtube you have people going "Do you believe us now?" even though there is no actual proof linking the two. The more people who get heart problems the more fuel to their fire.

I can't say for other sports, but it isn't that unusual for soccer players to collapse on the pitch. It isn't so common it happens every day, but it is common enough it isn't really a new event to have cropped up after the covid vaccine was introduced.

It's scary, but this kind of thing isn't uncommon. I remember around 2017, a 20 year old man had a cardiac arrest and died, while he was doing his morning jog. Wish I could remember his name, so I could link an article

What could have been the cause? An athletic 18-year old that is Lebron's son with good genes doesn't just have cardiac arrest. Maybe he never got the vaccine and got covid and it screwed up his heart? I remember Lebron showed his vaccine hesitancy a couple years ago. Or maybe he does a lot of drugs? Cardiac arrest at that age is rare.

For an athlete like Lebron's kid, it could easily be a multitude of drugs/enhancers some athletes take to get an edge.

There are so many reasons this absolutely could happen to a teenager it is hard to speculate.

This isn't true at all. Athletes push their bodies to the max. Especially in the modern era, elite athletes use science and pseudoscience to guide who to push themselves to the absolute limit. Sometimes you hit that limit. Simple dehydration or electrolyte deficiency can cause a cardiac arrest at any age.

It's more common for a young athlete or highly physically active person to have a heart attack than an average young person

Yes it is rare, and other pro and college athletes have suffered it. It is rare but it isn't something that cannot ever happen.

During routine physicals in college they discover some incoming recruits had a heart issue that was undiagnosed and then they basically are forced to retire. Journey Brown had an amazing start to his career but was found to have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and had to retire. Keyontae Johnson had cardiac arrest a few years ago and now is in the NBA.

Well, for that we better take a look at some annual statistics.

The best database I found for this (during dozens of covid discussions last year), was the NCCSIR annual statistics about US youth football, up to college level. You can find the pdf here: https://nccsir.unc.edu/reports/

Why the best?

Because the data goes back for nearly a century (90 years of data!), was originally supposed to analyse deaths caused by injury or trauma, but also includes indirect deaths.

As someone who goes crazy about spreadsheets, this is truly a great source for data. Just scroll down to bottom, til you hit "TABLE II. EXERTIONAL/MEDICAL (INDIRECT) FATALITIES INDIRECTLY DUE TO FOOTBALL - 1931-2022

These indirect fatalities also include cardic arrests.

So, lets go back again to the original question:

Is there actually an uptick though?

I have been a Cleveland Cavaliers fan since 1986, and I think the world of LeBron James and his family. I really hope his son has a speedy recovery and a healthy life moving forward. It is so scary and such a shame when something like this happens.

Also: Elon Musk is a complete idiot. I think there is a perception among many that if somebody has money, they have to have some intelligence to maintain that. We live in a world where Donald Trump and Elon Musk exist, so I hope we can finally put that correlation to bed.

Have you guys never really heard of teenage or college athletes having heart attacks or other cardiac incidents? I wouldn't say that it's an every day thing but this is far, far from unprecedented.

The difference here is that the afflicted party is the son of one of the most famous athletes in history andthus. Just hope that it's not a Hank Gathers situation (an All-American player who collapsed on court twice, and did not recover the 2nd time; he was 23).

Literally no athlete has died of a health related problem or even HAD a health related issue before COVID!

But more seriously....

Yeah, this though. I know there are plenty, but Muamba is probably the one I remember the most. I knew it would only be a matter of time before SOME athlete in America has a problem after the vaccines and all the dumb fuck assholes rush out to say it was because of the vaccine.

Damar Hamlin got physically hit in the heart and almost died in a NFL playoff game earlier in the year. The assholes blamed it on vaccines and then started crying body double when he recovered.
