It wasn't an inside job, but unfortunately they DID actually get advanced warning radar signals of the attack using their latest and greatest systems and they blew it off assuming it was a mistake because who the hell would be crazy enough to attack them out in the middle of nowhere?

https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/kermit-tyler-call-would-live-infamy
According to Tyler, at approximately 7:15 a.m., the information center received a call from the Opana Radar Station located in the north end of Oahu. The radar technicians on duty that morning, Army Privates Joseph Lockard and George Elliott Jr., reported the largest blip they had ever seen on their SCR-270 radars oscilloscope. The course they reported the incoming contact on was almost a direct line between San Francisco and Oahu. Hearing that, and recalling that he had heard Hawaiian music playing without interruption a few hours earlier, Tyler reasoned that the blip the radar technicians were seeing was not an enemy formation, but was instead a flight of friendly bombers approaching Oahu from San Francisco. Tyler told Lockard and Elliott not to worry about what they were seeing.

Shortly after talking to Tyler, Lockard and Elliott went off duty. History has shown what happened next. At 7:55 a.m., approximately 53 minutes after the blip representing the Japanese attack aircraft had been seen on the SCR-270 radars oscilloscope, and 40 minutes after Tyler told Lockard and Elliott not to worry about what they were seeing, the attack on Pearl Harbor began.

I want to remember that the Japanese had a dentist spy on the island, giving them inside information.

The dental records of the entire fleet were no secret to the Japanese.

I mean, if by "the middle of nowhere" you mean "the principal anchorage of the US Pacific Fleet."

The spy on the island was in the Japanese consulate.

At a time when all 3 pacific fleet carriers were at sea and not docked, yes.

My grandfather was a WW2 veteran and he honestly believed FDR knew about Pearl Harbor and let it happen anyway as an excuse to drag the US into the war. He believes this was also why a good portion of the fleet were out on drills at the time, so that the damage would be limited.

Of course, my grandfather was a Republican from Oklahoma who had always hated FDR, so there's that.

Japan prayed at the altar of Mahan anyway. The carriers were certainly good targets if they were there, but the primary objectives were the battleships.

i wont speak for my grandfathers beliefs but his national guard unit was mobilized and sent to Alaska a month before the attack. This has lead other family members of mine to come to a similar conclusion as your grandfathers.

now, tensions with Japan were very tense so the fact there was an escalation wasnt a surprise but the notion of deliberately turning our heads to a known upcoming attack is ridiculous.

He wasnt. Bush was born in 1946, the Hawaii Operation/Operation AI/Operation Z/attack on Pearl Harbor happened in 1941.
