Are you worried AI can/will take over your job one day?

And what, if anything, are you doing about it?

My job (finance related) is on every list I've read of those in danger of being replaced by AI. I'm worried and as such, probably overpreparing for something that may or may not ever even happen.

AI is already taking my gas station job slowly. I made a post but it was a long one so I'm sure bo one read it. Anyways with have a smart checkout that has cameras on it that just looks at objects and matches it to a data. It'l has about a 75% accuracy rating. But then you got to figure out which item isn't being scanned right and then scan it manually.

Anyways just because the machine exists it takes 40 hours from the store, so it is basically a full time employee.

I believe circle K's plan is too have smart checkouts run the register then get contracted people to do all the labor, we have 8 hours set aside for this contracting group called smart shift. they send someone to the store to work 4 hours and do menial tasks. We stopped using them though cause 95% of them so absolutely nothing and are lazy as fuck.

I'm not sure

I work with data, but the crux of my job is to get the right data into the pipeline and then make sure it's used correctly.

I'm actively working on using LLM to automate the part of my job that involves writing queries/coding data transformations

... but frankly that is the kind of work that usually ends up outsourced to India anyways.

I dont think my job is going away because of AI any time soon, but it will definitely refocus and it's unlikely we'll be growing the team i'm on to more entry level roles. I expect if i lose this job, it will be harder to find a new one.

tl;dr i'm making sure that i'm the one using AI to replace parts of my job rather than waiting for a consultant to be hired to replace me with AI

Imo it's new grads that are the most fucked, but most white collar jobs will be affected

You got good ones and bad ones. Also those who are way too easy on them. The latter is far more common then you think. You just naturally don't hear about them. Most COs are just there to collect a paycheck.

A good co is one like me. I do my job and enforce rules but at the end of the day the inmates respect me rather than hate me. And this is accomplished by treating them like people. Giving em a break now and again but having that understanding I got a job I'm being paid to do and I'm gonna do it.

Yeah unfortunately hiring standards are low. For better or worse though that attracts more people that just wanna sit on their ass and collect a paycheck. You do get those dickheads that are attracted to the "power" though. Both are bad in their own right. On one hand you have a CO that will use excessive force over the slightest thing and on the other you have one that won't move a muscle and a inmate dies that coulda been prevented.

I've saved lives rather it be by jumping in when shit hits the fan or simply doing my normal everyday job and in the process finding and removing stuff like shanks. Just doing my basic tasks though like patrols prevents a lot of shit.

My point was though is I doubt a AI can access when strict adherence to policy and rules is needed vs when the situation calls for some bending of the rules. .

One thing I was taught in basic training I still carry with me is common sense trumps policy.

Adult or juvenile corrections? I spent a few years working in juvenile corrections. We dealt with pretty much anything except murderers - who always went to country regardless of age. Once had a 6 year old molester in there. The hardest days were consoling the kids when their own parents wouldn't even come visit them on a special Christmas visit. The emotionally hardest job I've ever had.

Also completely agree with the respect comment. Our limit was 11-1: detainees to staff ratio in one of our "pods" - with 8-10 staff always nearby should a duress situation arise. If you disrespected the detainees, your life could be a living hell at the job. And the people with power trips were the worst. I mean seriously... acting like a hard ass to a 20 year old just so you can feel power is sickening.

the problem is not whether AI will be good enough to take your job. The problem is the employers are trying their hardest to make it happen, and if will take a "good enough" or even a "bad, but acceptable" level of performance from AI just so they can stop paying employees.

Think about call centers. In the past, you'd call customer support and you'd talk to someone. Now there is a stupid recording that always tells you that "our options have changed, so listen carefully" (LIE) and "due to an unexpected high volume of calls, the wait time will be longer" (LIE, no additional volume of calls), and then you wait hours after a 3 different sets of stupid menus, that usually finish with "did you know you can do this and many other exciting things over the internet? Try self-service at www.ourwebsite.com/support! :) ".

Is that shit even comparable to being able to talk to an actual person in customer support? Hell no. But it was deemed "good enough" to substitute people. And that's not AI.

AI will replace everyone when it is deemed "good enough", even if that means a horrible performance compared to an actual human.

Yeah, but I waffle on it. There are times I worry and times I think what comes out of all this hype will be a popcorn fart compared to the what's being predicted.

I do escalations for customer care. It involves a lot of listening, people skills and ability to think outside of the box. I don't think AI is close to being able to adequately replicate that to read people and a situation.

I work adult corrections. Out ratio is like 120 to one. Supposed to be 2 or technically 3 but 1 doesn't count cause they ain't allowed to leave the control room even in a emergency situation. All they are allowed to do is call for backup and hit the emergency siren.

And you made me think of this kid we got. He's 20 but been locked up since he was 15. Apparently shot his dad with a shotgun and killer him. If he wasn't so timid and shy acting I'd love to hear his story. Cause as said he's timid and shy acting. So I wonder what the hell happened to cause him to snap. It's a shame. Considering it was his father it's very likely a one time thing but now he's gonna have all these hardened criminals probably rub off on him while he's down. Kinda bugs me he hangs around a couple of sexual predators.
