It's not marketing, it's sidestepping gas mileage laws. Cars were supposed to meet certain fuel efficiency standards - updated periodically, of course - but exemptions for sport and utility vehicles were made so that things like a camper RV didn't have to meet the same requirements as a four door sedan. Manufacturers can get away with SUVs getting shit mileage while the equivalent "passenger vehicle" (i.e. minivans) can't.

No. In fact, things would get better.

Its a bit long, but this guy basically goes over every single separate reason that American style light trucks (including the ever-larger SUVs) are bad. And yes, he would also welcome the return of the Station Wagon, especially as they actually hold more than many SUVs.

That channel is beyond biased. He doesn't just dislike cars to an unrealistic degree but basically everything is presented as better in Netherlands (iirc). Including I believe the supposed Dutch propensity to let your kids on their own are really young ages, which has nothing to do with cars and infrastructure because I recall my English wife being similarly shocked

Heh... My wife has a Toyota Highlander. Has third row seating which we have used a ton. Not the most efficient I guess but can haul 7-8 people and gets decent mileage.

I drive a Corolla. Definitely miss my Tacoma but needed something smaller and better on gas. SUVs definitely have a place.

Other than fuel efficiency, which compared to SUVs of the 90s is not bad, it's mostly just blind anger at standard Americans. I am annoyed sedans are getting phased out though. I prefer how they drive.

Far more fun to drive.

I would prefer if Light-Trucks / SUV's were rare instead of common.

They're TOO large IMO and the opposite of what we should be striving for in our automobiles.
Smaller, Lighter, more efficient vehicles that Min/Max:
  • GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Restriction)
  • Fuel/Energy Efficiency
  • Carrying Capacity of Passengers and Cargo
  • Use the latest Crash Safety Standards
  • Make sure your vehicles is nearly impossible to be Stolen / Broken Into / Assaulted by the average thug / criminal

Does your ego/pride matter that much?

Drive a Sedan / Mini-Van / Station Wagon.

Do what is efficient, not what is for your ego, pride, or vanity.

If other countries can get by on smaller vehicles, there's no reason why we can't either.

The US didn't have a SUV / Truck cancer in the past, it was only relatively recently that we had a explosion of Trucks & SUV's.

I'm with you actually. I just vacationed with my best friends family with my wife. We used a minivan as transportation and it was much better than their SUV. I kept bringing up switching to a minivan but the wife wasn't having it. If it was my wife and I in their situation, we'd get a minivan.

But people make fun of people with minivans too so I figured who cares if a minivan needy family opted for an SUV for vanity since people will dunk on them either way

Mini Van can carry more cargo internally, is smaller & lighter than a SUV.

A sedan can work if you get the right one.

A SUV is less efficient than a equivalent Mini-Van.

SUVs and bro trucks are pretty popular here in New Zealand but are fortunately still in the minority. Most people drive used cars from Japan that are 10-20 years old so the majority of cars are from old trend periods. I drive a small hatchback which is a great city-only car, and a lot of people here drive kei cars...not sure if I could do that. Might have to some day the way car prices here are.

The layout of a SUV works better for animals than does a mini-van. Whether a mini-van is lighter or smaller than a SUV depends on the make and model. A sedan will not work with a child in car seat and dogs. A station wagon could work but they aren't sold in the US.

Volvo, BMW, and Audi, all make station wagons, but most have slanted tailgate glass that makes it hard to utilize the space. Only the MINI Clubman is boxy enough (vertical rear doors) to be a decent station wagon. So, of course, it is being discontinued.

We need to kill the exemption from the CAFE standards for Light-Trucks / SUV's

Bring them in line with crash standards testing against vehicles on the opposite end of the mass spectrum.

Also, any vehicle with a GVWR > 6,000 lb (3 tons) should have a MUCH higher annual renewal tax (2x Multiplier over any vehicle with GVWR 6,000 lb).

Normal Cars have 4"-6" of Ground Clearance
SUV's have > 6" of Ground Clearance and should be taxed for that
Every inch of Ground Clearance over 6" should get taxed as a annual penalty.

You do know what GVWR means, right?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GVWR
The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross vehicle mass (GVM), is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer[6] including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers

Once you subtract out all the passengers & cargo, the curb weight will be much lower than 3 tons.
