Some spoilers up to that point: CAN THE FUCKING SKY GO BACK TO NORMAL ALREADY. I'm so fucking TIRED of the whole game looking so fucking dim.

It's just kind of funny because of how extremely linear the game is at times. Like they easily could have just combined getting to the city+the mission in the city as one long segment (and I don't think it would even be the longest single segment in the game), but they just...didn't? Because not only can you do side quests on your "way" to the city, once you actually arrive at it it doesn't force you into the next mission either.

E: And hell NEW side quests actually unlock once you arrive.

I can't think of any game where doing a specific side quest results in failing the main quest, but this topic did remind me of the first mission in Deus Ex: Human Revolution where *SPOILERS* you need to rescue hostages, but if you remain in the area you start in for too long the hostages will be executed before you even get to the mission location.

One thing I did find funny was that the game doesn't really seem to consider that traveling actually takes time. I did the quest where you get your uncle to prepare a ship and he says it'll take a few weeks. I figured this would be a small time skip, but instead Clive says they need to go ahead back because it's a distant journey to the Hideaway.

So despite the fact that he's traveling a good distance across the continent, he decides to make a round trip instead of sticking around.

True, there are several points in God of War: Ragnarok where the main plot is something that really needs to be immediately dealt with and the side-characters just tell you that it's perfectly fine to go do side quests.

Yeah I've actually noticed how the story seems to bounce back-and-forth between "Travel in the realm is nearly instantaneous" and "Actually it takes a week to get anywhere" depending on what's convenient at the moment.

The whole sequence of events from after the boss fight in Kanver to when you return to the Hideaway after Clive finally hits it make absolutely zero sense from a passage of time perspective.

There's a point near the end, where the characters specifically say they'll need to trek through a long dangerous mountain path to get to the next objective. Then it immediately whips you to the map with the fast travel option to the doorstep of the objective.

Felt like a joke with the characters saying one thing then the gameplay immediately undercutting that. Thought I was about to unlock a new area only to be zipped to the next destination anyway.

I'll attest to that. A lot of side quests where you go from one side of the continent to another wouldn't make sense if you think too hard about it.

Game was somewhat conflicting in that regard. Before the final mission you're told to proceed asap, but also recommended to take your time and prepare.

With many players likely choosing the latter to complete the last loyalty missions. To which either option could easily screw over newer players doing a blind playthrough.

I read a story about a DM that did this. One of the best/worst games he ever ran by his own estimation. Started out with rumors of a Lich gathering armies in this one city. PCs sort of created their own side quest wherein they liberated this city from an oppressive government. Filled with intrigue, politics, combat, everything. To the gills. PCs were loving it. They won.

Then the Lich came with his army and Everyone Died.

On one hand it was hilarious, but on another it was also a real dick move. There's a reason that developers don't do that lol

yeah, I'm glad I waited to play it. I wasn't planning to do this blind. I always tend to finish everything at the last possible moment so I would have had the worst ending.

That's why I usually give the players some time. I remember one time that the players had two weeks to get to a certain city and it was a long trek which I filled with lots of things they could do and they were so quick to get to the city and I was so sad. >_< Then later they got to the city and there was going to be a huge gathering that they needed to get to or else they failed and they ended up missing out even with so many warnings from me...

The most annoying part imo is when the game will block you off from going anywhere besides the main mission area, and then as soon as the cutscene is over, you can go back to traveling wherever for side quests.

How is that necessary in any way

Yeah turns out what happens is that he follows you specifically for his side quest line, so if you pick it up and then go do all the others he stays with you the entire time regardless.

So really it just defeats the point and the only real reason to speed through his side quest is to unlock the one after it.

It's actually funny that there's a side quest you pick up in the town you meet up with Jote in, and when you leave the town if you head in the direction the side quest location is in (which is opposite of where the main quest location is), Joshua actually says to Clive "Are you sure this is the right direction?"
This is my gripe with every open world type game.
