Today, as I drove back to my landlord's house where I rent a room, it took me ages for me to notice a bleeding firetruck coming up from behind me. Cars far in front of me had noticed, and had pulled over. I meanwhile was daydreaming like the most careless driver I know. I had been wondering what those lot were doing, until the car directly behind me pulled over, and revealed to me that which I had missed. Then I panicked; I had thought that making the upcoming turn would have been faster than pulling over. I was already speeding up.

And now I can't even tell if I am more worried about the very serious traffic citation I will likely receive in the mail, or about the lives I've endangered by delaying the firetruck. I am not sure what to do with myself, after having felt relief that the firetruck wasn't going where I was turning.

You're probably ok, just be more aware next time.

You will be ok. Try to be more mindful while driving. Figure out a way to stay focused try different music or no music at all.

Worst that might happen is you might get some ticket in the mail but theres a good chance even that wont happen

It sounds like the guy behind you was even more oblivious than you so I doubt you endangered any lives

This. Unless the fire truck was literally riding your ass for miles with no one between the two of you, it's not like you were actually impeding their progress in any meaningful way.

And you won't receive any citations, because as Cacciato said that's not how citations actually work.

I did the same thing once. I was going through a main street in town, had my windows down and was just utterly blasting my music so loud I didn't hear the firetruck sirens (I assume) that were blaring. It wasn't until I looked in my rearview mirror and saw the firetruck grill taking up my entire back window that I pulled over, and I wondered how long I was just driving along not getting out of the way. Because yeah, the cars even in front of me had pulled over.

youre supposed to be regularly check your mirrors

We're all absolutely terrible, but that isn't a good example of how we're terrible. Give yourself a break and maybe talk with someone about how you tend to be hard on yourself.
