Speaking of isekai trash, I've been reading The hero laughs while walking the path of vengeance a second time. It is pure and concentrated edgelord trash and I find enjoyable.

Isekai been a thing forever. What you're specifically asking to end is the "Isekai Harem" subgenre that has been dominating, and the anime that hilariously started the trend was SAO, which really isn't an "Isekai" in the general sense that it is now.

Meant to agree with this before. But yeah, Isekai have existed for a long time. Like Magic Knight Rayearth is an Isekai from 1993. Three high school girls from Tokyo get summoned to a fantasy world with magic and monsters.

Also, isekai, literally just means "diferent/another world."

Don't know if it means something different when applied to Anime, as I'm not a super big fanatic or anything.

Just thought I'd mentione this. Personally not too into anime where the focus is some "harem" or some such.

I love isekai

The issue isn't with Isekai, it's with the generic fantasy universes with the game stats.

A lot of times, it's not even isekai, it's straight up fantasy that does this.

And then the protagonist is overpowered to hell. And the issue is it's always western fantasy, because you know the guys who make this shit are inspired from each other.

Twelve Kingdoms is good even though it's an isekai. Why? Because it isn't the exact same thing as the other isekai shows. It's more based off Chinese mythology and aethetic than it is orcs and kobolds and slimes that you see in every modern isekai.

One of the best isekai's I've seen is "Rise of The Shield Hero", surprisingly good with a very unique initial demonization of the main character I've seen no other anime explore.

I mean shows like Twelve Kingdoms were respectable. And even battle stuff like Psyren were much better.

Twelve Kingdoms really ruled.

The difference there was that they really leaned into the plot point of being from a different world, and how hard that would be. Nowadays, you only get one episode of them adjusting (If that) and then they are pretty much just a normal, if OP, character from that world.

Yes, an unknown is better than a known bad, but it's not the 80s and 90s anymore. Most dubbing is fine nowadays, and not to mention that watching and listening to a language you understand is closer to the original intent than reading a dub and not paying as close attention to the visuals or not having an avenue to use subtitles as they're meant to be used, to further an intentional sense of other onto a different character. Also, goes a long way to assume that random subbers are better at translations than professional dubbers, too.

No its not. I run into dubs every time I go looking for a particular clip on YouTube, and theyre as cringe as they ever were.

I enjoyed Overlord, and U was a fan of slice of life isekai harems like Nagasarete Airantou before SAO even existed.

I mean, I don't bother with following seasons anymore, unless I really see some talk about a show. That's why I watched Asobi Asobase.

Anime now is gives away the premise in the title with stupid shit that sounds like "I accidentally turned into an RPG goblin in a alternate magic universe where they don't know what a video game is, why doesn't my harem recognize me?"

Anime for the most part is overrated to hell and back by the fans.

While a few series spawn that manage to live up to the hype every few years almost all of them end up as massed produced shovel ware garbage with the same ideas, animation, styles, premise, concepts, chatacter designs and fanservice.

The rest just comes down to how well or not the above is executed.

World Trigger was weird and I hated the MC in some parts of the show, but overall it was a fun ride. And yeah, it's one of the few anime I've seen where the MC isn't the most OP mf in existence.

Tokyo Revengers is another anime, where the MC isn't OP.

Escaflowne, Inuyasha (some people will debate this), Rayearth, and one or two others come to mind when thinking of the classic Isekai.

The biggest problem with the modern Isekai is it's embracing of two things in particular: The MMORPG/Gamer element and the Harem element.

What would be cool is more of a sci-fi/fantasy Isekai (Other than Knight and Magic but that only barely counts as a hybrid) that meets at a happy middle between the two.

I kind of have an idea for one but it's embarrassing to share for two reasons. One, I don't think I'm a good enough writer to do it justice even with the image in my head. Two, it sounds sappy but I'm also a sappy person by default.

It is. lol. Harems might have seemed cool to me when I was twelve but honestly it just gets a big ol' huge wtf from me. Even did when I was sixteen. I am a lot older than that now, and it hasn't gotten any better.

It also feels like they're attacking hobbyists with that set up "If you weren't a geek you'd totally have a better life" is just the general vibe of those things, at least to me.

Not to say Isekais are all bad, things like Slime are fine but..."Seventh Son" is probably a perfect example of what I mean, tbh.

Thankfully, there are a lot of isekai that don't have that "attacking hobbyist" vibe at all. Like Ascendance of a Bookworm. It's about a woman who gets isekai'd into a frail girl's body after she dies in an avalanche of books. The time period she gets sent to is similar to the 14th century. And her obsession with books actually helps her in this new world.

Even the obliviousness can be done well, like in High School DxD (mostly the light novels though, as I heard season 2 onward is a bad adaptation), where its a combination of genuine obliviousness and legitimate romance-related trauma and PTSD forced obliviousness for self preservation.

My roommates were watching the first two episodes yesterday... It doesn't really feel self aware... Just feels like an average isekai to me... Even the opening looks like it wants to set up a harem for the protagonist...

This is my issue too. Everything that's happening is silly, but it's playing it straight. It's hard to figure out the vibe. I need it to be more like that muscle wizard show from last season

I only read the manga and it's actually good.

My problem with isekai that it's a lazy setup. It just handwaved the origin of MC and their powers as a cheat power when he got reincarnated/transmigrated.

Imagine if Naruto's source of power is because he is a reincarnated Japanese.

A lot of isekai series actually works without the isekai origin but as a standard fantasy series.

It's actually very wholesome and that's part of the charm. He sees her as a adoptive daughter and it's heart warming to see her slavers get their just desserts. Also there is an JRPG element to it which I enjoy. It's also always fun to see people underestimate her.

I don't really hate isekai, hell I even read the LNs for So I'm a Spider and shield dipshit, but man what I wouldn't give for a vanilla, no game mechanics bullshit high fantasy series.

I've been telling my weeb friend this for years, yet he routinely hits me with the "No, but this one is different". And then I watch an episode with him and it's yet another shonen or harem isekai where everyone can do magic and everyone looks the same as the other 50 anime he's shown me.
