Long time ago, God knows how old I was at the time. I started replaying it again recently and tonight I cleared the Fade. I don't even know why I got filtered by it the first time, since this time I actually had a lot of fun with it. Had some light mvania elements and it was fun transforming.

It's just KoTOR with a fantasy twist.

I still enjoyed it. I think I played through it three or four times, the fade was always boring but I'm pretty sure I found a fairly quick path out of it.

And I am now firmly anti-mod for first timers! Friend tried to convince me to put in the mod this time and I decided not to after being on the fence about it, now I'm really glad I did that.

That was my experience, too. First time I heard of it was at a friend's house on their console. He let me play and I bounced off the combat really hard. I tried it again on PC and liked it a lot more.

Deep Roads does go on too long, but it's not as dull or boring. At least imo. I've never liked the Fade sections so I understand. I guess the fact that it's too long and a big part of the game is the reason there's no "Skip Orzammar" mod lol

And while both are visually dull you get exactly what you expect with the Deep Roads. The Fade is a magical realm consisting mostly of shades of brown.

As a massive fan of Inquisition, and even 2, it had far too many dull and pointless filler quests and large areas without much in.

The main villain kinda falls flat sadly, and he had a lot of unused potential. His motivation and revelations are great but just felt they could've done more with him myself.

As for origins, I love the fade and dark roads myself, but I can see why people have issues. Can be long on repeat playthroughs and the roads does have some very uncomfortable scenes and implications.

Eh, I played the game at a time where I just "powered through," regardless of what was thrown at me. I think my gripe with it would have been on the dullness of it, not the tedium. At least games like DMC and God of War made their backtracking kind of interesting (still a pain). I honestly don't think it was *that* bad though, certainly not enough to dissuade me from multiple playthroughs.

I've only played a smidge of Inquisition and none at all of DA2 so I'm excited to play those for the first time, too. I also want to read the books/comics, as I'm really digging the lore and world building so far and want more of it.

Ivynn posted... Another point in the Deep Roads favor is that you're also playing normally in it while the Fade had annoying gimmicks and backtracking.
I don't think the backtracking was bad, but maybe it depends on the order you go to the islands. I got the mouse and burn man right away, so that helped. After getting the other two, revisiting the other places went pretty quick.

Another problem is that it blows its load too early. The high point of the game was near the beginning during the siege of your first headquarters. Game never gets more interesting than that. Until the Trespasser DLC anyway.

Honestly, the Dragon Age series as a whole has never really had strong villains. They tend to revolve more about social disorder and how it provides opportunities for ne'er-do-wells to seize power. The villains, more often than not, are opportunists taking advantage of a chaotic situation.

In DA1, the Darkspawn are as much a force of nature as anything, used by Loghain to gain power - he's ultimately brought down by managing the Darkspawn threat and subsequently turning the mechanisms of the state against him.

In DA2, you spend the entire game in a city that's constantly teetering on the edge of disorder, whether from the Quinari or the Mage/Templar conflict. Despite Hawke's best efforts, they can't stop the inevitable collapse into violence.

In DA:I, Corypheus is an opportunist operating through a fanatical cult who takes advantage of civil conflict in Orlais and Ferelden in a bid for godhood. Once the Inquisitor manages to settle the Mage/Templar conflict and the Orlesian Civil war, Corypheus and the Venatori are immediately put on the defensive.

Good games (for the most part) with some very memorable characters.

The Fade is fine. On your first playthrough. In a game designed for replays for different character builds, branching storylines, and different endings. In every playthrough the Fade is exactly the same. That is why you skip it on replays with a mod.
