and if you saw the trailer than you basically saw the movie. Yeah it's one of those movies that plays itself straight. Bit disappointing because other than Boss Baby and Trolls, Dreamworks films tend to do a good job and subverting expectations and I was hoping for something like that with this movie. But just like Boss Baby and Trolls, it's also a kids movie. There just really isn't anything there for the adults to enjoy. 3 (8,9,&14) of my nephews called the movie boring but 2 (6 &8) of my niece really loved it (surprisingly, our theater was packed but also fairly silent for most of the movie except for some laughters here or there). It's a cute movie and it does have some decent messaging and it doesn't hit you on the head with its message regarding puberty (unlike Turning Red, which was so on the nose).

I wish I liked it more, 5.5/10.

There's like 2 teams at Dreamworks, one that makes considerate films and another that just shovels them out.

Funny enough, when my wife texted me to confirm I was going to take my niece and nephews to watch the movie "Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken", I responded, "Oh, so did Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell finally released the kraken regarding the 2020 election?"...she didn't laugh lol.

I rarely say this about animated movies because I try to imagine what my daughters will think, but it looks fucking awful.

Watching Nimona tonight

I don't think you'll enjoy the dreamworks movie. It's a safe pass for any adults, there's really nothing of substance to get out of it... though my nieces enjoyed it a lot so take that however you will.

Nimona, on the other hand, I heard nothing but good stuff about. Going to watch it with my wife and kid tomorrow on fourth of July.

I'll probably watch it if it goes up on Netflix but I'm not super interested.

Saw elementals last week with my wife and we both enjoyed it a lot.

As an aside, did you know that Nimona was 70% completed when Disney bought Fox and closed down Blue Sky Studios (most known for Ice Age). Annapurna pictures then decided to open their own animation department and hired some former Blue Sky execs to run it. They brought Nimona with them, finished it, and then used Netflix to distribute.

See, Elementals did something that I actually liked, it had an immigration subplot that took my by surprise. I didn't see anything in the commercials, marketing, or trailer that it would talk about that so it was nice they dabbled into it. It also had enough stuff for adults to enjoy about the movie to the point where I can call it a "family movie" instead of a "kids movie", even though the weakest part about the movie, imo, was the romance. It's a great movie, but the reason for its flak is that it's not on-par with any of Pixar's great which is just unfortunate for the movie.

That's great that some people from Blue Sky are still in the industry. I had a friend who was a full time animator there and essentially gave it up when he was let go because Disney shut down Blue Sky studios. He's back to being an accountant and is making decent money, but it's still sad to see a guy so passionate about his hobby doing something he hates.

I mean no matter how well regarded you are as a studio, you'll always have some crap movies. It's just timing if releasing said crap movies that are going to hurt the studio or not. Dreamworks can survive if this movie bombs, but I'm not sure the state of Pixar considering Lightyear bombed hard.

Yeah, DreamWorks will be okay. The recent Puss in Boots was stellar, and the Bad Guys last year was enjoyable as well.

However, Illumination has clearly bypassed DreamWorks as Universal's golden child.

Nimona is pretty kino, confident that your daughters will like it although there's some stuff in there that will most likely fly over their heads.

Even outside of shutting down Blue Sky, they also pushed against the movie itself for reasons that will become apparent when you watch the movie.

Sweet. Well, they are aged 8 to 16, so some may get more than others

If I know what you mean, Disney then released Strange World, so they probably should have stuck with what is clearly going to be the better movie.

Because if they mentioned it in any of those places, the right wing nuts wouldve review bombed it.

That's a little bit of it, but there's also some other themes going on in that cauldron that I highly suspect also played a part. Don't want to spoil anything, though.

It would've been reviewed bombed regardless because of its association with Disney. I think they did purposedly, like they did with the mom turning into a bear in Brave.
