Might be smaller than what you want, but speaking just from the safety aspect of things, I will forever be a proponent of the Prius. I was absolutely creamed late last year by a huge SUV that ran right into my door in an intersection. I was pretty banged up, but with all the airbags and structural design I got out of it without even a broken bone. I'm certain that in a lot of other small to midsize cars I'd have been seriously fucked.
I owned a Prius and absolutely loved it. I got rear-ended at a stop by a GMC Yukon going like 45 mph, and while it killed that car, I was totally uninjured. If I hadn't gotten hit, that car would probably make it to 300,000.

Only real issues are that they are super slow, (which can be frustrating getting on and off of the highway/passing cars), and the catalytic converters on Prius' frequently get stolen, which will run you like 1-2k when it happens.

Yeah, mine was a total loss. My girlfriend cried when I showed her a photo of the driver's side.

They're slow on acceleration, but once you get up to speed they cruise pretty nicely. I once got pulled over for doing 100 on the highway. The cop said "I didn't know these things could go that fast" lol.

I wouldn't call myself a car guru by any stretch, but you ought to be able to get a new 2023 Honda Civic / Accord in the $23-27K range or so.

I got a new Accord at the beginning of 2020 for around $24K, and a quick google shows the averages prices haven't jumped more than a few grand (assuming that's reliable). My coworker (former Honda mechanic) claims Hondas aren't quite the gold standard of reliability they were in past decades, but they're still a pretty solid choice (I've certainly been happy with mine over the past 3 1/2 years).

EDIT I guess I didn't take taxes and fees into account, would probably end up out of your desired price range.

If we're talking prev gen for used, I'd say Civic.

If you found a deal on a current 11th Gen, I have 2 in the family with zero issues. They're borderline midsize tier relative to maybe a what that was considered 2 or so generations ago.

Had 2 Mazda CX5s in the family and an ND Miata. Drive a little fun. Sucks for passengers. Build quality is so-so with age (a lot of creaking). Mileage isn't up to par (heard that being the case for the Mazda 3 as well). Infotainment is dated.

Rented a previous generation Corolla. It's not awful, but it's like sitting in Tupperware. It will definitely get you around, but I wouldn't call it a pleasant place to be in for the money.

Rented a previous gen Accord as well. Nice car albeit butt ugly. I mean it's mainly a bigger Civic as V6 options are gone.

I bought a brand new '22 Honda CR-V EX last year for $32K so a bit over what you're looking at price wise but it's super solid and has that Honda reliability.

I paid a fuck ton in taxes because I had to buy it in Colorado but with a decent down payment, you should come out ahead.

It's a SUV but it has decent trunk space.

my 2013 is worth more than I paid for it 5 years ago even though the paint is all fucked up. it's only 95k miles and I just did 4k worth of work in the last couple years so if I get a paint restoration I could sell it for 12-13k

I'll give you a good example. My parents about 4 years ago bought themselves a brand new van. 2 years ago they found out that van was worth at last 10k more than they bought it for, so they sold it and bought another brand new van with added features. It's ridiculous the market for cars and computer products these days.

Yeah it's been crazy. Last year I sold my 2016 Civic for almost as much as I bought it for. Used that as an opportunity to upgrade to an Accord lol.

Reminds me of my car crash story. Lady pulls off to the median on the highway to answer a call, instead of the right side where your supposed to pull off. She pulls in front of me going 70 km/h, I hit her at 100. We both were fine, though I did break my pinky. Anyways, I was trying to get 4 grand for that car and insurance gave me 8. Dad took that 8, and bought a 50k car that was coming off of the showcase with an already 12k discount. So dad got a Miata for 30k, I got his old car, which was maybe 2 years old at that point?

Lady tried to file charges, but thankfully there were witnesses.

Funny enough, that same car dad handed me down ended up breaking down 3 times in a row. Wipers stopped working so I put it in the shop. Driving home from the shop both brakelines failed (thankfully I was in a town going 40km/h), and then following that, the power steering went. Thankfully I got a new car so I sold it for a grand.

I skim-read most of the topic but I'd back up the Civic as a good option.

I have a 2010 Type-R and even though I drive it hard and it's clearly lived a hard life, it's a good little car. The only issues I've had were common Honda things, easily fixed even without any mechanical knowledge.*

I'd otherwise recommend an Impreza WRX as they're dirt cheap, especially as an estate, but the Honda is probably the better bet.

* - edit - the petrol cap sometimes sticks open, you just need to bend the spring back a little. Easy. The boot leaks, so you just need to splurge some sealant over the boot lid.,

Absolutely terrible advice. You're basically advising him to get a lower end and smaller Civic instead of the essentially new (a 36k mile Honda is nothing) top level/trim Accord?

That Accord Touring should be pretty loaded with much more space.

TC originally said he wanted something used in the $25k price range. And new Civics are also below that range, hence my suggestion. I wasn't telling him to choose the Civic over the Accord.

And to be fair, Civics are actually pretty roomy now. Civics actually have the same amount of front leg room as the Accord. Just slightly less leg room for the rear seats and less cargo space.

I wonder if he wants the bigger car for winter driving or just for space? For winter driving I'd go with the accord for the heavier car on slippery roads? Just for space? The civic is definitely the way to go.
