But at the same time it's extremely rare to find shows that got more popular over time. It's possible, but it typically involves some level of cultural phenomenon to it. I'd guess that at Dark Crystal's price they determined that even with an uncommon popularity upswing, it still wouldn't get the success metrics they were looking for. And they also made the, likely correct, assumption that fantasy puppet show was too niche to blow up into a cultural phenomenon. I think part of Netflix's early cancelation rate comes from how big the initial swings are. Like the budgets they give shows are frequently so big that it feels like they have to do just gangbusters to succeed. And that isn't always realistic for niche titles. Like One Piece is almost certainly dead on arrival. That's not and indictment of its quality, but it's rumored $18 million per episode budget is a crazy albatross for a live-action adaptation of an anime to have around its neck. Oh and Glow might be my most sad.
