Should we still go to the moon?

A lot of people suggesting these sorts of things should be outlawed. Especially in lieu of the amount of resources spent on the rescue. When you look at things like Apollo 13, Challenger tragedy and also Apollo 1 it seems space exploration is just as , if not more, unsafe. I think that should also be banned imo. What do you guys thing?

I think we need to globally unify before we start tackling the space issue.
That's what they did in Star Trek, right?

Say what you will about the merits of spending money on space travel at a time of widening inequality, NASA could at least be expected to take the appropriate amount of care in ensuring the safety of its missions.

After the early (most before it was even called NASA) accidents, NASA has had an incredible culture of safety. Challenger really reset the way they operated since then.

Pretty sure if they ever tried to go on with a crewed mission against recommendations there would be a lynching in mission control. That will never happen again without generations of mismanagement.

A bunch of rich people dying on a completely unnecessary commercial space flight is an inevitably. I just hope that when it happens, it doesn't involve dragging any of their family members with them and it's quick and easily observed. And not like "we missed the target and now we are blasting off into space where we will suffocate and our disappearance will be without closure."

The problem with this comparison is, like James Cameron pointed out, this isn't some brave new world the Titan was breaking ground in. It's a well worn path and they know how to make submersibles safe and have done for decades... the guy running the company just didn't think it was worth the expense to do so.

And the thrill of those things aren't the possibility of death, it was to see the Titanic, or experience real weightlessness.

In both cases, professionals with years of training / expertise / discipline shouldn't be hindered by this; casual tourism fueled by hubristic corner-cutters should absolutely have the hammer brought down on them. Honestly I'm still flabbergasted to learn that the latter even exists in the first place for deep-sea exploration.

I like how you know jack shit about me and assume I'm poor. Granted, I do have a unique perspective on these things as I did grow up basically homeless. Now, I'm nowhere near the realm of our corporate overlords but I do well for myself now.

I know there's little benefit in these industries outside of appeasing those at the very top, but at the same time they still generally cut every corner possible to maximize profits. All to see some worthless rotting metal, whose story had long since come and gone, or to play at grandeur above the clouds when you already got pretty much everything that can be offered on Earth. I just don't see the merit.

If life is so boring, you haven't lived enough. If you've done so much you can't find joy in the present, you just need some help. Especially in a position to make it better instead of just placating yourself.

Are we assuming that the government would do a better job? After things like the challenger or Apollo 1? It sucks and they definitively sounded like they cut corners but this isn't a government vs free market thing.

The mental thing is that just yesterday the company's YouTube Channel published a new promotional video showing off previous Titanic dive footage while stressing the safety of their subs. I suspect many of the new comments showing positive support for the company and stressing how cool it would be to visit the wreck are from bots. The other co-founder seems to be really serious about trying to salvage his company's reputation.

Basically. Tourist trips to places man cannot live yet/anymore are cash grabs and dangerous. My ex wanted to complete her travel baucket list to all continents so she wanted us to go to Antarctica. Obviously I refused to pay 10K for that shit and suggested Dubai, Tokyo or something else.

Anyway she ended up going after we broke up but was delayed by a year. She had to fly to Chile during the protests/uprising. Fly to some dinky research tanker and take essentially a life boat to shore. Barren land, dangerous trip every step of the way. She made it back but the group tha went after hers lost 5 people. Yes, 5 people died. Shitty life boat capsizes and two old people die. She didnt mention the other 3s cause of death, probably got got by leopard seals or some shit.
