You default on your car or home, you lose the car or home. It makes sense to not benefit from something you took out a loan for but then defaulted on the loan.

Start an "education directory" where every employer can openly view how someone did as a student, both in high school and beyond. Include courses taken, grades in those courses and overall GPA. If someone defaults on their student loan, revoke the degree and notate in their "education directory" the person had attended but had their degree revoked for loan purposes. Give the employer the option then to lean into the reasons for defaulting or choosing to not go with someone failing to meet their obligations. Maybe there is a good reason for the default but an interviewer putting someone to task over how or why they defaulted it would give a great glimpse into their grit, self awareness and willingness to take ownership for decisions.

Better idea: if you default on your payments and they take away your car/house/degree, they have to reimburse you of all the money you had already paid.

There are several high paying jobs going unfilled. Just because someone has a college degree, it doesn't mean they can't go get a trade apprenticeship should their education not yield the career opportunities they were seeking.

Again, it perfectly demonstrates one's grit.

Then higher education needs to be something more readily accessible to people of varying income levels so that schooling can be accomplished on one's own earnings.

Loan forgiveness I can get behind

If someone fails a single class, their memory of college is wiped, and they are sold into slavery for a few years to pay it off anyways. They obviously didn't have enough grit to make it in the real world anyways.

Or the student could take 12 credit hours per semester while working full time to put themselves through college like I did. Sure, it took 5 years, but I got it done while bartending and paid off my ~$30k student loans within 5 years.

Again, comes down to grit. And maybe some delayed gratification.

Look, I'm just trying to present a solution here both sides could work with. The left wants the forgiveness - done. The right wants accountability - done.

Win-Win

What about the fact that creating and operating this entire new government service is probably going to cost as much as a lot of proposed forgiveness plans that are actually about forgiveness? What about the disabled or those that also have to work to take care of a family?

Not to mention the whole idea of taking someone's degree away from them for not having money is just cruel and unusual.

(Along with all the other economic changes, challenges, and issues this solution runs into that make it sound like you thought none of this out at all honestly)

Forgive all student debt, make college free, and give a tax credit to every borrower who had paid >70% of their loans equal to 40% of what they borrowed.

Nobody can give a legit answer to why someone who took out an obligation should get to default on that obligation with no strings attached. Lots of attacks, no real debate.

How about this idea: loan agents arent allowed to lie to people, especially minors and adults under 21, about how much those payments will actually be, and how much their degree will allow them to actually make. Because right now they do lie about those things, which is the actual problem.

Society: If you want any hope of even a semi-passable decent life, you need a good degree. Oh and those can cost $50,000-$100,000. Which you dont have, so we can give you a loan! I hope youre prepared for that, 18 year old who is just entering the world with no work experience and no basis or perspective to understand what this loan really means relative to the monthly life bills you dont even have yet.

Why do people enter into these obligations they cant fulfill?
