Ive seen a lot of prominent western journalists bemoan how the story after the Bahamut fight becomes a nonsensical tragedy that comes out of nowhere. My only response to them is that they shouldn't tweet during cutscenes and then get pissed that the game didnt stay a Got clone after the first couple hours. It legitimately seems like some people wanted this game to stay grounded and not be a fantasy game. Morons.

I'm not a huge fan of how Ash is basically already gone, but to say it isn't insanely obviously foreshadowed is some bozo shit. Like did they think the country in bed with the main villain was gonna be doing well? Or did they expect Ultima to just be chill in the end?

Okay I havent played this other than the demo yet but the idea of Tactics being a main series game is patently absurd. It literally has Tactics in the name. In gaming Tactics spinoffs are so common they are a meme, and as far as I can tell FFT is what started it. Especially since the justification is nothing more than well I liked it!, which of course is fine, spin-offs can far outstrip their originator. Nobody cares about Cheers anymore but people still love Frasier. You wouldnt say that Frasier season 1 is actually Cheers season 12, its obviously a separate thing.

Now if Tactics is mainline then I see no reason that Crystal Chronicles isnt. Of course them we can also say that Super Mario RPG is a mainline and even Super Mario Kart. Just silly.

Sonic Spinball is my favorite main line sonic game

Not that they didn't innovate within the genre, but for better or worse they clearly had a stricter defintion of what a mainline Final Fantasy should be pre-merger. I always saw Tactics as way less of a divergence than including MMOs in an otherwise singleplayer series. These days the thing that would disqualify a game like Tactics isn't content but budget.

I mean, I can safely ignore Tactics as a mainline game, cause it's not the style of game I enjoy playing. Tried it twice, couldn't grab me. I think only two SRPGs ever did (Devil Survivor and Stella Glow).

I have not played XI but I would certainly say that XIV is more like the other numbered games than Tactics is. Regardless of the games themselves however mainline status is also a budget, marketing, and priority thing and FFT was obviously a smaller production than its contemporaries that sold much, much less. By contrast XI and especially XIV are obviously top priority titles. Of course we can just do the same thing as for Zelda - the multiplayer games are mainline, but we can just distinguish between the single player and multiplayer games.

I think Square are more likely to consider games like X-2 and VIIR mainline than Tactics, anyway.

I mean, 7R is good...but not THAT good. It's better than XVI, but only because the FF7 coat of paint is better than XVI's bleak as fuck Valkyrie Elysium slice of shit look.

I definitely prefer 16 to 7R so far

And 16 is dark fantasy. Of course its bleak

I prefer some levity (SOME) with my angst or bleakness, like 9 and 10, but whatever works.

That said, I'm glad Clive didn't try to hit on any girls with a pulse. That sort of "comedy" gets old.

ive seen that complaint a lot actually, and i disagree. Games funny as shit. Caulk and bawl, bath bombs, viagra made from cactuar needles. I even saw a zero wing reference in there somewhere

Inject dark fantasy straight into my veins.

There is some fun, but Cid and Mid being the lone excitable people can be draining after awhile. Gav has moments too, but holy fuck.

We need a sage off between Maechen and Harpocrates. Full on phone book voices and cadences.

Oh, I didn't even comment on the sound work. The voice acting in this game is, of course, excellent. I don't think.....anyone ever did an anime grunt of acknowledgement? Which was like half the 7R script. Even down to the throwaway sidequest characters, everyone landed. Which, really, to be expected from Koji and his team, the XIV voice acting post ARR is tremendous.

The music...is in a wierd place for me, because it's competing with Soken's life work in XIV. Of course the music is incredible, but there's a decade behind XIV, it's not really comparable. The subtle music actually impressed a lot, stuff like the low hum in the Royal Meadows. Titan and Bahamut's music was probably the best, and I think that may be because it's the stuff Soken veered from his instructions on? In an interview he revealed that while most of his XIV work is left entirely to his own choices, he was actually following guidelines for most of his XVI music, and I do think that shows. Let the man cook. Do you know how many times I cried playing Shadowbringers and Endwalker because of the music? He's come a long way from Mario Hoops 3-on-3.

I found the boss music and some cutscene stuff pretty nice.

This is great news because the animeish VA is legit the biggest thing giving me pause

Not sure why 7Rs VA work would bother people. Pretty good cast overall, doing justice to those concerned about changing from the AC cast.

Its the idea that ellipses need to be voice acted. Ellipses don't make a sound, God dammit!

To say the man has range would be a gross understatement.

He did a Powerman 5000 track for XIV in the same expansion he did a glorious emotional ballad of tragedy that makes me cry everytime.

I would never notice that as a "thing" a script would do. Then again, maybe I'm just numb to anime acting tropes after 25 years.

Never in my life did I think Gav would end up being one of the main characters of the game when he first showed up.

Game beated.

Good stuff, best FF since FFX for me.

Got some minor quibbles and tweaks I'd make to the gameplay, like allowing a third ability on each Eikon via R2 + circle, and the ending could stand to be less ambiguous but overall this was a blast.

Oh, you know what one other issue I think needs addressing: the game needs loadouts.

Yeah this would be nice too.

About 50 hours in, spending time on the hunts and not progressing to the final dungeon just yet.

At this point, I'm pretty sure I know where the game will land unless it throws something drastically different at the end.
It's a top 10 FF game I've played for sure, but not quite top 5.

It's introduced a lot of cool new things, but at the same time while playing the game, you can already tell how they could improve on these, some of those elements have already been pointed out in the topic.
But crucially, the game did not sell me on the notion that all FFs going forward should follow the template this game has set. As a standalone entry great, but I wouldn't want the next 3 mainline entries to be like this.

I mean....I don't think a main FF game has followed a template set by the previous game since FF6, arguably.

Unless you just mean it shouldn't be an action game.

Also whatever the next entry is.

I'm okay saying farewell to the stagger system. It can stay as a legacy mechanic in the Remakes though.

I don't mind the stagger system in this one because it mostly just happens naturally. Sure some attacks are better than others for it but that's as far as it goes.

In a vacuum it's a good system.
But I would like to see them take a step back from it.

I saw the stagger system in Ys first. I don't like it there either. I think it slows things down depending on the damage disparity of non-stagger vs. staggered state.

So I started new game + on final fantasy mode. I decided to remove Gigaflare and Zantetsuken from my bars. Game became much more fun again lol

In fact, the only ultimate I'm keeping is Judgement Bolt.

Motion blur and player follow toggles are amazing. Both of them have been a minor annoyance to me

holy shit i just did the bahamut fight. that felt a lot gamier and more substantial than the others. that was legit incredible. also loved how it played like panzer dragoon for a little while there lol. all of the cut scenes surrounding it were great too. fuck me.

also these eikon battle songs are fucking awesome
