With this company, yeah.

If I was going to do this (and issues of money aside, that's a very big if), I'd only do it with James Cameron's tech. We know it works and is safe.

The downside to James Cameron's tech is that his submersibles only hold one or two people. That's not very profitable for tourism.

This is like the Challenger and Titanic, but this time the careless Billionaire was dumb enough to be caught on his own deathtrap.

Aside from the 19 year-old, there's a happy ending to be found here.
With the titanic, it was a bunch of people taking a maiden voyage on a new ship. Rich and poor alike perished due to a whole lot of bad decisions on the crew's part, and outdated safety standards. You guys ought to read A Night to Remember, which has a lot of authentic survivor's accounts. It's interesting and informative.

I don't know what went down with the challenger, so I can't say anything about it.

Challenger (if that guy was talking about the space shuttle) had a known and well-documented issue with the seals between segments of the booster rockets losing effectiveness at low temperatures (like the day it launched). Engineers warned their bosses, but the bosses overruled them because Reagan was going to give a speech that night about the space program.

When the main shuttle engines fired (the ones on the shuttle itself), one of the booster seals broke a little from the sympathetic motion and eventually, burning fuel got through it, burned through one of the struts holding the booster to the fuel tank, and boom.

Exactly. I don't doubt we have the capabilities of building proper tour subs, but this...thing was a death trap and the only possible logic behind it was if it were a convoluted pre-meditated murder/suicide.

It's more that when you've got at least two billionaire families wanting answers, "We don't think there's an appreciable chance they survived" isn't an acceptable answer.

Of course, those billionaire families are only too happy to let taxpayers of several countries foot the bill, consuming resources that could have been used to save significantly more than 5 lives, but that's just how billionaires do.

Because the billionaires wanted it to go on as a "rescue" operation for as long as possible. Once it's confirmed their are no lives to save it becomes a "salvage" operation and taxpayer money won't pay for that.

Not sure where some of ya'll source your news but there's articles in the NYT and on BBC, AP, Reuters, NPR etc almost daily about Ukraine and those migrants lost at sea. Complete bullshit that those issues are being ignored by news outlets in favor of the submarine story.

Did the submarine take top billing in the headlines for a few days? Sure. But if anyone is looking for reports on other issues, those reports are very much out there. Sounds to me like some of you need to source your news better. Instead of following headlines, try looking for the news you're seeking.

Imagine living in America, there's a school shooting every few days it seems. How can you not get desensitized when that's your reality?

Parental pressure is a real thing. His dad framed it as a father's day gift. His son was trying to be what he thought was a good son to his father. Kids that age don't think their own parents will lead them to their deaths negligently.

I definitely have family that gives a lot of pressure, and it's awful. I still think 'bottom of the ocean' is a pretty big deal that you can say 'fuck no' to. Obviously the kid gets the most of my sympathy.

That's kind of the issue. Nobody's complaining that they can't find news on all of the other tragic deaths that happened at the same time, they're complaining that these 5 people (at least four of whom were likely horrible) who voluntarily took an extreme risk and ended up dying for it are being given more public attention than hundreds of others dying in far more tragic circumstances. Of particular note is how much money was spent trying to confirm the fate of these five people (and how much more would have been spent recovering the sub had it been found intact), given that that same money could have saved considerably more than 0 lives if allocated toward any of those other tragedies.
