Apparently a playtest has a plot line with time travel. The player must go back in time and make sure everything that happened in WoW lore stays that way.

One of these quests is to put back the "Demon Soul" which apparently was something used to keep a character named Alexstraza captive, and who which orcs used to forcibly breed their red dragons. At the end of this quest Alexstraza finds out what you did and is extremely distressed.

People pointed this out in the forum so Blizzard is saying they'll be removing some quests.

So WoW has a quest where you have to go to the past to restore the past perfectly by retroactively changing the past in the lore.

That sounds about write for modern Warcraft writing.

This would be a horrible thing for them to commit to. What they should commit to is being able to treat each situation like this with the seriousness it deserves, giving closure to the player when they have to involve themselves in it, and remaining consistent to the values of the characters who have roles in it.

Is that like normal for WoW lore or is that just some random ass darker tidbit? If WoW is that dark generally, seems stupid to change it. If it's not that dark normally, makes sense.

The lore itself isn't exactly founded upon protecting puppies and sanctifying rainbows. The WoW lore has always been dark, so stuff like this would be hard to spot because it's essentially a drop in the bucket.

The thing is there's a difference between a faction doing something morally repungnant, and the writers contriving a situation where you're told the only way to save the world is to facilitate that repugnance happening. WoW has countless magic doodads and macguffins and deus ex machinas, where's the rod of time that can stabilize the new timeline where the bad stuff didn't happen?

At one point you are given the option to allow a guy to control reality effectively making everyone's dreams come true, like characters who lost love ones have them back and those loved ones are actually caring and nice to them in certain cases and the one who got raped never got raped at all and is living a successful life. The game treats this as bad and the protagonists only rebuttal to it is "But you're robbing people of free will and choice!" and while it's true the guy controlling reality could make it so people can't oppose him, he's not planning to nor wants to do that and counters back if he's robbing people of choice then aren't the protagonists doing the exact same thing with their heart changing stuff and they have no counter counter point to that and just resort to violence.

Didn't know WoW lore got that dark. Damn. The again, WoW is from like the 2000s and dark fantasy was all the rage in those days.

It's kind of a meme to misrepresent the game that way. Persona 5 Royal adds a final chapter to the game where a well-meaning person basically steals the empty throne of a god from the original game's ending, and uses it to manually rewrite everyone's lives into version they'll be more happy with. He is directly inspired by the heroes of P5 and tries to get them on his side by granting them wishes. Ann once told him it would've been better if she and her friend Shiho had never been sexually harassed and exploited by their teacher Kamoshida, so the person rewrites that. In the actual game the cast talk about the whole issue from several perspectives and it is treated with the weight and complexity it deserves. The canon ending is to stop the person just like they'd stopped the Demiurge who had basically a similar goal without a human face in the original story. But you can also accept the person's rule which is treated without negative judgment (except by one character, who has fair reasons for it but is not a perfect person themselves, again it's all treated with a lot of nuance). Ann and her friend oppose the rewrite because they ultimately believe in finding the strength to move forward in life instead of running away from the past, which is more or less the theme of the whole expansion.

Warcraft 2 in game model for the structure that produced dragons showed chains around a red dragon - iirc the manual also described the orc clan forcibly breeding the dragons...

Yes and no - it's more a problem with how the game/universe evolved. WC1 and WC2 were written with the orc Horde very clearly evil, so a lot of dark actions were created for their history. Then from WC3 forward they tried to change the reputation, and part of that is characters in game figuring out how to atone etc.

That particular plot point was from the 90s, even. It happened around the time of Warcraft II in the story line.

That's some straight up WH40K type stuff, and even WH40K lore doesn't deal with serial rape/forced breeding anymore from what I've seen. I think the fanbase pretty much agreed they had enough of that when the Daemonculaba went viral in the community.

Yet they couldn't make orcs cool.
Though I suppose there's some similarity, WH orks are quite fond of the color red after all.

Not sure what Gor refers to but they came from a different planet (Draenor) than the main setting (Azeroth)

On its surface, it was just an excuse to send the player to Grim Batol or whatever as a historical segment, but I don't think they put quite enough thought into the implication when they came up with the exact reasoning.

But according to TC said dragon learns what you did and gets distressed. So doesn't that mean they knew what they were doing?

I'm not saying the lore can't exist. But I can get people going "wait wtf, I'm facilitating this!?"

I haven't done the quest or read into the issue, but different factions of dragons often ask you to do things without other factions being aware
