I can remember like all of 1,6,7,9,10,10-2, 12 etc

But when it comes to FF8 I just remember bits and pieces.

Like Laguna being Squall's dad or the giant Dino or the alien sidequest or the shitty card game. I remember the party putting on a musical to cheer squall up. I remember everyone turning out to be oprhans who grew up together because they all have collective amnesia because of summonings.

I remember having to buy gas for your car.... in a Fantasy Game.

I remember the main villain (who might be Rinoa but I can't remember why) wanted to compress all time so everyone does for some reason. Can't remember why she wanted that, can't remember why she was farting about in the present or how that helped her. Can't remember why loads of people openly helped her try to destroy everything

Didn't they go to space at one point?

I just remember Quistis being one of the best characters in the series and Squall crying a lot.

I caught a ff8 stream by accident and there was these cat creatures I dont ever remember being in the game. It has been over 20 years since I last played it.

Laguna is obviously Squall's dad and Raine (?) his mother, but it's never explicitly stated in the game.

Rinoa being a past version of Ultimecia is only a theory. The people who made the game were surprised when presented with this theory (and they liked it!), so it's not considered canon. That being said, I remember reading an excellent fan fiction with this as its premise, so I wish it was canon.

Guardian Forces, when junctioned, attached to the part of the brain that stores memory, so over time repeated usage of that would give one amnesia. But they also make you into a super soldier, so trade off, I guess? Didn't stop Irvine from being a badass gunslinger when he decided not to use junctioning, anyway. Whatever the case may be, it was obviously the writers throwing shit against the wall with trying to explain why the main characters did not know one another, and why they didn't remember that the first antagonist, Sorceress Edea, was their matron at the orphanage.

Squall cried a lot because he was a kid with a sad past with extreme abandonment issues. But if you oay attention to him over the game, you find out he had the overall best character development of any FF MC outside of Zidane. Unfortunately, his and Rinoa's character development comes at the expense of literally the rest of the cast.

I remember thinking "School and pumping gas?" even playing in the 90s

And then I discovered there are literal exams in the options menu.

I feel this is a cultural thing in Japan that doesn't translate. Not many westerners fantasise about working hard at school

I just took it as the game being so back ass complicated they needed to skill check your knowledge of it to make sure you knew what was going on.

I dont think 8 is a great game. But it was my first FF. I replay it regularly because I enjoy the secret content and the side quests.

and because its a game thats extremely fun to break. The remaster version is really fun to play in that regard

They cap levels at stupidly low levels outside of Omega Weapon and the final boss, so you do it to get stronger than the enemies. It's why unless you are going to gain no levels you might as well just pretend like it's a normal FF.

Basically, it's the same as leveling in FFVI without optimal espers. It's just that it apparently was waaay too complex for children to mash X through or something.

The secret was to avoid leveling at all costs until you got the GF with all the +stat skills, then power level your characters one at a time to become godlike.

Also, what the mobs dropped or could get turned into changed with levels, and there was a GF ability to level up/down mobs to control that.

You can't remember because the game was very forgettable. Don't trick yourself into thinking there's a good experience hidden in there.

Funny too because the big plot twists has to do with suppressed memories, but it's presented in such a ridiculous way it's practically a footnote.

This isn't even something new or exclusive to FF8. You go to the moon and fight moon monsters in FF4 on a giant whale. Bahamut lives there.

Ultimecia herself was probably the weakest aspect of the story. Her backstory and motivations are shrouded in mystery.

Which can work for some characters if you're given enough material to work with but she has none or just not enough. Which is pretty disappointing

there was even a rock concert at one point, right? lol. and like, some red fire animal guys? at some point?

the whole third half is a complete empty void in my memories. the garden is your airship but what do you do with it? no idea.

Because it's complex enough that people legitimately have their personal subjective takes and delude themselves into believing that they are objective in any way.
