I caught a ff8 stream by accident and there was these cat creatures I dont ever remember being in the game. It has been over 20 years since I last played it.

You're probably thinking of FF 7. Cait sith was ff 7.

Yeah, but most enemy types were some sort of machine (which makes sense considering the setting, but still). I remember reading in the original strategy guide that came with the game, the one that's a collector's item now (dammit), that the writer did a survey of the enemies in the entire game and found that something like 30-40% were weak to lightning attacks, which means you should always have at least one of those materia around.

Most of those enemies who were weak to lightning? Machines.

Man With the Machinegun still remains one of the best battle themes ever. Hell, every battle theme in that game is just great. Some of Uematsu's best work.

It was indeed the Versus guide. IMO, best strategy guide ever written--sans the faux outrage over Cloud crossdressing, anyway.

Yeah. Omega Weapon also had a death spell for being a level that was a multiple of 9, I think. Might have been a multiple of 10? All I remember was that I needed a lot of Hero's Drinks and junctioned 100 death spells to my party members to win that battle.

Easy (not really) I ran from every fight until I got the Diabolos GF, then I made sure to get Encounter-none asap. Then you literally explore the rest of the game without getting into a single random battle. Dungeons, world map, caves, all of them were just eerie places you explore without an enemy in sight. It's actually somehow more eerie playing with no random encounters, not to mention fun. The creepy music plays on loop with no gap.

You'll notice boss battles don't give exp points, only GF points. You can stay pretty low leveled that way.

Took me nearly 10 years to finally master ff 8, when I first played it the level scaling made me drop it by the third disc when the game took a spike in difficulty.

And really, ff 8 is a card game masquerading as a jrpg. But after you do learn how to break the game, it makes 100%ing the game Easy. I even cheese omega weapon who was at level 100 despite my party being 17-19 because of triple triad. Turned a card into 100 hero drinks to turn invisible/invincible and then just beat him that way, because I sure as shit wasn't gonna indulge him and his attacks if there was no need to.

I still prefer a normal game with no level scaling, but as a one time thing I'll give ff 8 a pass.

Yes! Sometimes you get tired of random encounters. Having the option to skip them should be included in more games.

It helps when RPGs have the enemies visible on the field, but often times they still charge at you.

I always loved how Chrono Cross does it. The bosses are what level you up. Random encounters give you money and items. So grinding is less of a chore as it never really needs to happen since your levels are based on where you are in the story, and all characters are at the same level.
