The first player to reach Hardcore level 100 in Diablo 4 saw their character die after the game disconnected.

As reported by PCGamesN, Twitch streamer Souab cArn Hanaf recently reached level 100 in the games most difficult mode, and was recognised by Blizzard as the first to do so.

However, as cArn continued to play the game to try and reach the final boss, the game disconnected from the server.

If a player dies in Hardcore mode, their character is permanently killed and they have to start all over again from experience level 1.

Because a player could potentially deliberately disconnect when their health is low to avoid dying, the game treats a disconnect as a death.

As such, when cArn rebooted the game, he found that his Hardcore level 100 Barbarian character, which he had been playing as for 82 hours, had died.

Couldn't they just preserve the fucking game state? So even if you disconnect on low health you're still stuck in the same situation when you reconnect, so it doesn't matter.

It makes no sense for a Hardcore mode to depend on your online connectivity. You shouldn't be able to lose days of progress just because a squirrel chomped the fiber cables across the street, you have no control over that.

also that article is a bit misleading. a disconnect in combat in HC isn't an "automatic death". if you're playing some sort of build that could still kill the enemies while offline or the enemies were really low you could technically live. it's just very unlikely, and you don't die instantly on DCing, you'd be dying in the last 5 seconds the connection was active right before the server stopped talking to your game

but if you live until the server drops your character you will just be at a checkpoint when you log back in

I've died twice in Titan Quest now (trying for a zero-death 'chievo*) but I think I found a cheat.

They can't preserve the game state. It's a perpetually online game, in which anybody at anytime (unless you're in specific story based areas) can just walk up to you and help you fight.

Now, I'm not defending the game here. It's a shit system and it results in shit things like this. Always online requirments are almost always shit. But it is a fundamental part of the game, and so long as that's the case, then merely saving the state of the world is simply not possible.

Like, if he was involved in a global event on the world map, there could be a dozen other completely random players fighting alongside him. How do you preserve that?

See the thing is there's a scroll of escape that instantly teleports you out of the dungeon. Blizzard also has said the item should automatically activate in the case of a disconnect to save the player but it hasn't been doing that. There's been quite a few people who lost HC chars to disconnects and the scroll failing to kick in. Shroud lost his level 100 Hc druid to a dc and died to a maggot last night.

Every Diablo game is like this going back to the first one. It's entirely why 'hardcore' mode is a thing.

The original Diablo 2 wasn't 'always online' but if you wanted to be considered a legitimate 'hardcore' player you had to play online (because some 'clever' people backed up their hardcore characters offline and nobody saw that as legitimate). Getting killed by lag/disconnects is just part of the 'difficulty'

oh and D2 had the desync problem that would cause you to die too. running along and all the mobs disappear and then 30 seconds later your screen resets and your dead body is surrounded by a whole cave full of ice yetis

I know in Grim Dawn I never bothered after a rare spawn near the bandit coliseum hit me with a full spread of Stun Jacks, probably dealing enough damage in a split second to kill me 5 times over.

Hardcore, or 'Dead is Dead' playthroughs are something I might self-impose, to allow for exceptions in cases like the game crashing, but wouldn't participate in within a game's framework.
