There are a bunch of newer directors ready to take the helm or have already begun and there are young-ish icons who still have decades of work to potentially put out.

Just learn their names and their body if work. Youve obviously done that before.

Eh, it's possible that the directors the TC listed are a product of their time and specific place in Hollywood, and the age of star directors with their specific trademark may simply be dying off. But if it is, it's a slow death, because there are plenty of directors that still have years ahead of them that have their own brand/people will come just to see their movies. Maybe they won't be household names like Spielberg or Scorsese, but neither is de Palma, even if he is amazing.

And there are plenty of great and fun movies directed by people no one has ever heard of. How many people can name the director of Edge of Tomorrow off of their heads, for example?

Yeah, I know *YOU* can name him. But maybe 1/10 people on the street can, but maybe 8/10 at least knows the movie. I.e., a desync between a good movie and the director that helmed it.

it isnt different. i was prematurely mourning the loss of our best filmmakers who are all entering their late eras. and then you named a bunch of medium talents who i don't care for or people who are getting sucked into the IP vortex. i see this as a negative, yes. how can anyone who likes movies not?

I think it's a gimmick because nobody who genuinely loves film cares that much about theaters or insecure about whatever shit people are in to.

The theater can die a slow death because people suck and I'd rather enjoy an older, fully restored movie in my own home.

Every twenty years or so the now "old" generation proclaims everything they loved as kids is dead and the new generation is going to destroy everything, and then, without fail, the new generation does the exact same shit the old generation does, and the cycle continues.

For every 70 year old director on his way out, a 20 year old student is learning the craft to replace him.
