i'm not saying they can't be done well. animation can be fine. i just said as much. i'm merely pointing out the disappointment with people frothing at the mouth over something with a pretty low ceiling - corporate cartoons centered on IP. i'm sure spiderverse is fine. the first one was. but don't people ever like, grow up? instead of forming these weird fandoms over stuff that is made for kids? when youre in your 20s or 30s or even older maybe?
Well, Spider-Verse was one of MANY movies I am excited about. You know that also includes Killers of the Flower Moon.

Also, anyone can enjoy things made for kids. Teenagers often rail against kids stuff because they want to be seen as "mature" but then they actually mature into adults and learn to channel their inner child again. But Spider-Verse isn't even really made for kids.

have you watched any akira kurosawa yet btw
Oh, you remembered! Despite our incessant arguing, I think us hanging out, having a couple beers, and debating would be fun.

So far I have seen Rashomon (liked it a lot) and Ikiru, which I thought was great until the third act. It really went too far with the anti bureaucracy thing. Not because I disagree, but because it insulted my intelligence with its lack of subtlety. I actually prefer Living. I was about to watch Seven Samurai and then Tears of the Kingdom disrupted my whole month.

Do you have a Letterboxd account?

the people who say "respect animation" actually mean "respect the cartoons for babies that i like since i don't like engaging with stuff for grownups. let me like this pleeeeeeeease. also i love anime."

instead of like i dunno watching don hertzfeldt or phil tippett or sylvain chomet or whoever. maybe those are too advanced since they aren't made with children in mind.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

no anti intellectualism is when you only watch mass marketed IP movies and you use the cs lewis quote or talk about your inner child as an excuse to defend your lack of curiosity. or call people pretentious or virgins or whatever when they suggest you watch something else lol

I will say the TC does have a point in that that 'classic' directors are all gonna die soon. And I struggle to think of modern directors that reached the heights of Scorcese and Spielberg. Like, there are good directors still obviously, but I can't think of any modern one under 40 that's like a superstar director worthy of branding things "A (last name here) Film."

You have an inner child too!

But I am going to try to refrain from any personal attacks for now on. It's unnecessary, especially when I can just criticize your words on merit alone! :)

I also do think that the fact that I have kids lets me view animated films from two perspectives. I try to be as objective as possible, even if an impossibility.

Under 40? Yeah, probably true. I don't think TC is devoid of points, but he takes them too far, and the doom and gloom isn't needed.

best directors to debut in the past 10ish years?

robert eggers
ari aster
greta gerwig
barry jenkins
josh and benny safdie (now just josh i think)
chad stahelski
jordan peele

this is only people i've seen 2+ movies from. i dunno. not super inspiring. jenkins doing lion king and gerwig doing barbie is demoralizing. eggers and aster are fine i guess... peele i feel like needs a co screenwriter to help him refine some stuff and also not have an exposition dump at the end of his movies. kinda reminds me of m night except without any serious stinkers. safdie bros are p good tho... who knows if stahelski has the juice without wick. also only americans since i can't really keep track of foreign filmmaker debuts sorry.

No matter what you get people coming out the woodworks to defend random blockbusters and shitty films like their life depends on it.

villeneuve and inarritu are actually, and i do believe this genuinely and am not trolling or playing into my character here, terrible. except for enemy. that movie is good.

nolan and del toro are whatever. pretty mid. not someone i get excited about. cuaron was ok but the whole 'im gonna do a bunch of long ass takes, isnt that fancy?' thing he's been doing for the past 10 or whatever years is tired. i hate that shit. editing is the most powerful artistic tool in the history of mankind. use it.

Cuaron's long take in Children of Men is unbelievably good. It makes an already harrowing scene even more visceral.
